We take a short selection from the English language works by Master Sheng Yen to explore what Chinese Buddhism can teach us about meaningful living.

Dharma Drum Mountain's branch monasteries and practice centers worldwide have been promoting Three-fold Education and Four Kinds of Environmentalism, endeavoring to help purify human minds and society. The Dharma Drum Mountain Book, Movie, and Meditation group is an informal, English language group that meets one Sunday a month to discuss the writings and talks of DDM's founder, Master Sheng Yen.

Founded by Master Sheng Yen, Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts has established Taiwan’s only graduate program centered on spiritual ecology as the foundation for sustainability: the In-Service Master’s Program in Spiritual Environmentalism and Sustainable Development. This program aims to cultivate individuals who can apply the principles of spiritual environmentalism and practice sustainability with compassion—for themselves, for others, and for the environment.

A distinctive feature of the program is its integration of learning and practice. Classes are held in downtown Taipei on weekdays, while on weekends, there is experiential learning at Dharma Drum Mountain, where students can engage in meditative practices.
The faculty includes senior disciples of Master Sheng Yen, as well as distinguished professors from leading universities, including National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, National Taipei University, and National Cheng Kung University. Tuition is also more affordable than that of similar in-service programs at national universities.

The carefully designed curriculum systematically guides students to apply spiritual environmentalism in daily life, professional sustainability practices, and various organizational contexts. The program seeks to benefit individuals, society, the environment, and workplaces by nurturing graduates who embody compassion and wisdom and can contribute to personal well-being and the well-being of others.

Join this program to enrich your life, find greater meaning in your work, and create deeper value in your life journey.

We have journeyed through 2025, a year marked by the rapid evolution of AI and an ever-shifting global landscape. We are invited to reflect on how, amid constant change, we might keep our hearts from feeling depleted or lost and instead cultivate true happiness and inner abundance.

In 2026, Dharma Drum Mountain has chosen “Blessing and joy in abundance” as its annual theme, with the hope of offering wishes and a stabilizing sense of peace to society.

Master Sheng Yen reminds us that all phenomena arise from the mind. True abundance does not lie in external wealth, fame, status, or power. Rather, it lies in knowing how to appreciate our blessings, cherish what we have, and live with gratitude and a spirit of giving back.

When we slow our pace and take in the mountains, drifting clouds, and gently flowing waters of the natural world, our hearts gradually open and find ease. When we find a guiding refuge in the Dharma, even in the midst of adversity, the mind can remain calm and untroubled. And when we carry gratitude in our hearts and understand contentment, even with nothing in hand, we are still able to experience the many quiet beauties of life.

2026: A Year of Blessing and Joy in Abundance

“By appreciating our blessings, our life becomes abundant. By repaying the kindness of others, we fill the world with blessings and happiness.”

Joy and harmony arise from mutual appreciation and support between people. From a Buddhist perspective, everyone we encounter is a benefactor in our life, offering opportunities to cultivate both merit and wisdom. When we face others with a heart of gratitude and a willingness to repay kindness, our hearts become gentler and more humble. This enables us to act with greater grace and harmony and, in turn, to inspire and positively influence those around us. We can further practice “treating others as ourselves,” seeing others as we would see ourselves—arguing less, understanding more, and fostering more harmonious relationships.

Abundance is often associated with having sufficient food and clothing. In modern society, material sufficiency is no longer difficult to attain; however, true spiritual and inner abundance still requires our collective effort to cultivate. Each of us has a responsibility and duty to care for and protect the Earth—our shared mother. Reducing waste and minimizing pollution are actions within everyone’s reach. When we recognize and cherish our blessings, the Earth becomes more peaceful, and human life naturally grows more abundant and fulfilling.

After completing the morning recitation, one sets out carrying the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as one’s own well-wishes for all sentient beings. With a joyful and uplifted heart, one steps into the day, bringing light and auspiciousness wherever one goes, creating wholesome connections in all that one does, and encountering every person as a Bodhisattva in the human world.

[Buddhism Q&A] How should one recite the Buddha’s name when feeling angry or sad?

When individuals experience anger or sadness, their emotions often become unstable—leading to impulsive words that may hurt others or to inward rumination that deepens distress. In such moments, whether for oneself or when advising others, one may gently remind oneself to recite the Buddha’s name as a way to calm and regulate unsettled emotions.

Reciting the Buddha’s name can effectively soothe agitation and emotional turmoil. When anger arises and harsh words are about to be spoken, pausing briefly to take a deep breath and replacing those words with the recitation of “Amitābha Buddha” can prevent harm, ease interpersonal tension, and restore a calmer atmosphere for communication. When alone and overwhelmed by anger or sorrow, mindful recitation can help steady the mind, gradually dissolving intense emotions and transforming inner turbulence.

This practice can be applied at any moment in daily life—during anger, frustration, sadness, distress, or even joy. Through wholehearted and focused recitation, attention is drawn fully to the present moment, allowing distracting thoughts and negative emotions to subside. As the mind becomes collected, the body and mind naturally settle, emotional burdens are lightened, and one may gain a more balanced perspective, realizing that situations are often less dire than initially perceived.

Ultimately, reciting the Buddha’s name offers a path to transcend pain and sorrow. When negative emotions arise, gently reminding oneself to engage in this practice can cultivate inner clarity, emotional stability, and a sense of peace and joy grounded in each mindful step.

[ ’s Heart Sutra Reading 09] Shariputra! All dharmas are marked by emptiness — neither arising nor ceasing.

“All dharmas” refers to the five aggregates, which include all physical and mental phenomena.
In Buddhist terminology, these are known as form (material phenomena) and mind (mental phenomena).

From the standpoint of time, we observe phenomena as arising and ceasing.
From the standpoint of space, we see them as increasing and decreasing.
From the ordinary person’s viewpoint, looking at the phenomena of time and space brings feelings of joy or disgust —

Joy is called purity (śuddha), and disgust is called defilement (aśuddha).
Therefore, from the perspective of ordinary beings, the universe appears to be filled with arising and ceasing, increase and decrease, purity and defilement.

However, from the Buddha’s perspective, both arising and ceasing are temporary —
nothing truly comes into being forever, and nothing truly perishes completely.
“Arising” occurs when various causes and conditions come together;
“Ceasing” happens when those causes and conditions disperse.
Thus, what we call “birth” is not truly born,
and what we call “death” is not truly gone.

— Adapted from The Classic of the Mind: A New Interpretation of the Heart Sutra by Master Sheng Yen

「是諸法空相」的「諸法」即五蘊法,包括一切物質與精神;

從時間的立場來看事物,叫「生滅」;
從空間的立場來看事物,叫「增減」;
