【April & May: Taiwan’s "Plum Rain（梅雨季 méi yǔ jì)" is here】
Every year around this time, Taiwan switches to "endless drizzle" mode. We call this the Plum Rain (Meiyu) season.
Why "Plum"?
No, the rain doesn't smell like plums. It’s called that because in the regions south of the Yangtze River, this is exactly when the plums ripen. Ancient people thought the rain was as "punctual" as the fruit, and the name stuck.
Laundry might take forever to dry, but it’s a term full of seasonal character. That said, since Taipei gets so humid and everything gets moldy, we often joke that it’s actually "Moldy Rain" season!
