*🎶 Steelpan Workshops | A Historic Cultural Exchange in Colón 🇵🇦🇹🇹
The sweet sound of steelpan echoed through the Centro de Artes y Cultura de Colón during the historic workshops hosted by St. Francois Girls' College of Trinidad and Tobago
Students from both public and private schools showed up in great numbers, eager to learn how to play the Caribbean’s national instrument.
During the sessions, Colón students learned the chords to “DNA” by Michael Teja and “Old Lady Walk a Mile” by Lord Kitchener, connecting deeply with their Caribbean roots through rhythm and melody.
🎼 The ability to play the steelpan runs in their blood — many of Colón’s youth are descendants of English-speaking Caribbean migrants from Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad.
✨ A powerful bridge of culture, music, and shared heritage between Panama and Trinidad.

Reflections on Cultural Diplomacy in Action
Today we reflect on a powerful moment of cultural diplomacy shared by St Francois Girls College Steel Orchesta from Trinidad during their visit on Tuesday 7th October 2025 to the Embassy of Panama🇹🇹🤝🇵🇦
Welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality, the musicians experienced firsthand the kindness and pride of the Panamanian people — a true reflection of the nation's rich cultural spirit.
In this space, they learned about the deep-rooted historical ties between Trinidad and Panama, especially the shared cultural heritage with the Afro-Caribbean descendants of Colón.
This diplomatic encounter laid a meaningful foundation of mutual understanding and respect, preparing the group for their next journey to Colón, where they will teach steelpan to the community— a gesture of cultural exchange and empowerment.
The visit culminated in a historic performance on Friday 17th October 2025 in celebration of National Calypso Day in Panama — a shared tribute to our musical roots and Caribbean unity.

In a groundbreaking celebration of Caribbean heritage, the St Francois Girls' College Steelpan Orchestra has been invited by the Center for Arts and Culture in Colón to lead a series of steelpan workshops and performances in honour of Panama’s National Day of Calypso, which is celebrated on October 17.
A media release said, the orchestra will conduct hands-on workshops for secondary school students across the province of Colón, culminating in a vibrant concert that pays tribute to the region’s rich Caribbean musical legacy. This initiative marks a historic moment for the community of Colón, which will for the first time reconnect with its West Indian roots through the resonant rhythms of steelpan music.

It was truly an honour to meet Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panamá Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez🇵🇦 at the 31st Anniversary Celebration of Association of Caribbean States host by the Embassy of Panamá in Trinidad.
During our interaction, he was informed by Ambassador of Panamá Diomedes Carles about the work I’ve been doing in Panamá —bringing Spanish , Art and Business students from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 for immersive, cross-cultural experiences that go beyond the classroom.
As a language educator and immersion program specialist , I am passionate about building bridges between nations through education and authentic cultural exchange.
I am proud to contribute to stronger regional ties and to decreasing the cultural and language gap that exist between Trinidad and Tobago and LATAM region.

The Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Panama, is proud to celebrate a meaningful milestone in cultural exchange between Trinidad and Tobago and Panama!
We were honoured to welcome Mrs. Anika Plowden-Corentin in Panama, a talented artist from Trinidad and Tobago and founder of Chosen Hands, an NGO that uses art to empower vulnerable communities. Exhibiting pieces of her artwork in the International Exhibition “Preface - Panama Chapter 2025” marks Trinidad and Tobago’s first-ever contribution to this event.
With the support of Ms. Aleah Guitan, Director of Trinitica International, Ms. Plowden brought a delegation of 14 art students from St. Francois Girls College and Queen’s Royal College and 3 adults to take part in an Art Immersion Programme — participating in an art workshop at the Center for Arts and Culture in Colón with La Escuela de Bellas Artes Colón, exploring museums, galleries, the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo, and connecting with the rich cultural tapestry of Panama.
Special thanks to the Gala Galería de Arte Latinoamericano for their collaboration in amplifying this exchange. This initiative is just the beginning of a broader Cultural Diplomacy project between Trinidad and Tobago and Panama.
Art is a universal language — one that unites, inspires, and builds lasting bridges between nations. -Corentin
