A remarkable opportunity for any young person. My time at the Association of Caribbean States from 2006-2008 was a truly rewarding one.

Reflection:
How the Association of Caribbean States Shaped Me

1. The ACS shaped my understanding of what it means to be Caribbean. Before ACS, I thought of T&T as just “home.” After engaging with the ACS, I saw that we are part of a 25-member state family — from Mexico to Guyana, from Haiti to Suriname. One sea, one people, many voices.

2. The ACS shaped my leadership spirit.
Watching Caribbean leaders come together to tackle trade, tourism, disaster risk, and sustainable development showed me that leadership isn’t about one country doing it alone. It’s about regional collaboration.

3. It shaped my personal philosophy.
The ACS motto is about unity in diversity. That taught me: We are stronger when we honour and respect our differences and build on our common aspirations. That’s the same philosophy my team and I now teach at Elevate Youth Academy.

4. It built my emotional intelligence.
In ACS spaces, you learn to listen across cultures, languages, and histories — Spanish, English, French, Dutch. You learn diplomacy. You learn empathy. You learn that “my problem” is often “our problem.”

5. And it called me to become a regenerative leader. Because the ACS focuses on protecting the Caribbean Sea, building resilience to climate change, and creating opportunities for youth, it taught me that true leadership leaves the region better than we found it.

Today, through Elevate Youth Academy, I’m doing my part. Raising young people who don’t just think locally, but who think regionally and globally — with Caribbean heart.

The ACS didn’t just shape my career. It shaped my worldview.
And for that, I am forever grateful.

Though we come from different contexts or backgrounds, it should be our common aspiration to become future leaders who impact generations to come.
