The Academy for the Performing Arts is deeply saddened by the passing of Mark Loquan, a respected composer, cultural contributor, and longtime friend of the steelpan community.

Mark wasn’t just a composer—he was a builder. Over the years, he worked closely with Dr. Mia Gormandy Benjamin and Seion Gomez on initiatives like Pan Notation and the Virtual Steelband, pushing the boundaries of how we teach, share, and preserve the artform.

He was no stranger to APA. As a guest lecturer, Mark brought valuable insight and inspiration to our students. Many of them were honoured to perform in his 20th Anniversary concert at NAPA, a memorable event that featured the National Steel Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor Dr. Gormandy Benjamin.

Mark also produced the film “Women in Pan,” filmed in part at UTT, which highlighted the contributions of women in the steelpan movement—including our very own Dr. Gormandy Benjamin and Tie.

His legacy is more than just music. It’s the way he collaborated, the stories he helped tell, and the spaces he created for others to shine. We are grateful for the time he shared with us, and we send our love and support to his family, friends, and the wider pan community.

Thank you, Mark—for the music, the mentorship, and the movement.
You will be missed, but never forgotten.
