Today, we honour the strength, resilience, and legacy of our African ancestors. Emancipation Day marks the historic abolition of slavery in the British Empire, which took effect on August 1st, 1834—a turning point that changed the course of our nation's history.

Trinidad and Tobago proudly became the first country in the world to declare Emancipation Day a national holiday in 1985—recognizing the importance of freedom, cultural identity, and the enduring contributions of the African diaspora to our society.
