Here are some tips we use for teaching at Unique Minds Learning Centre students:
Educate yourself: Understand autism, its symptoms, and how it affects behavior.
Use visuals: Visual aids can help students with autism understand concepts without relying solely on spoken language.
Avoid sensory overload: Many autistic students are prone to sensory overload. You can reduce sensory input by asking them to focus on a point in the distance or close their eyes.
Bring in special interests: Use a student's special interests in your teaching to make subjects more engaging.
Follow a daily routine: Routines can help students feel more comfortable and predict what's coming next.
Provide a sensory retreat: A quiet room with visual and sensory elements can help students feel less overwhelmed.
Be patient: Patience is important when teaching social norms.
Build an organized environment: Label areas to help students practice putting things away and reduce clutter.
Use direct language: Speak with students in a way that they will best understand.
Give simple instructions: Simplify long lists of steps for assignments and projects.
Offer natural rewards: Use a different approach to rewarding students' efforts and progress.
Encourage social interactions: With some extra preparation, students with autism can enjoy group activities.
