Screen time is a hot topic for parents and developmental experts and rightfully so. Tablets and portable devices are convenient tools in the modern age and even we as adults use them, BUT we also have to respect a child’s development especially that of a young child.

Portable screens mean more opportunities for use, which can be a slippery slope when it comes to child development.

Recently, a new article about tablet use was released. The study suggests there is a link between early childhood tablet use with increased anger and frustration in children.

The findings suggest that increased tablet use at 3.5 years is linked to higher levels of anger and frustration at 4.5 years. And that this emotional dysregulation seemed to lead to even more tablet use by age 5.5. This study was done during the pandemic and opens up a lot of questions, which I dive into in this week’s newsletter.

My problem is not with the screen itself, but what it takes the child away from when we use a screen too much or in suboptimal situations. Replacing other essentials such as: meals, sleep, physical activity, learning language and communication skills, and learning emotional regulation skills.

If you’re finding you’re using screen time as a soother as the rule and not the exception, consider emotional regulation FIRST before offering the screen. I respect that one-offs or occasional moments will happen, but screens as soothing shouldn’t be the rule.

Of note: for neurodiverse children, such as those with autism, tablet use might serve different purposes, like helping with focus or providing comfort. Screens can provide sensory input and a sense of safety and security.

Remember not to judge OTHER people’s screen use, but balance your family’s use based on your needs and being mindful of your child’s development.

For my extended discussion out on 8/21 on digital soothing, this article, some limitations and things to consider from the study including how screens factor into neurodiverse families; Comment:
