The placing of the Evergreen sprigs for Hillview College is part of an old tradition, honouring the founding fathers of the institution. The Evergreen represents everlasting memory that never fades, recognizing the invaluable work of those who built the institution in the early days.
In the Presbyterian church, the evergreen is symbolic of eternal life, hope, and renewal. While the plant has no religious significance, in traditions such as this old practice at Hillview, it is used as a source of teaching students to remember the roots of the school.
In the past, this tradition was practiced to recognize Rev. Dr. John Morton and Rev. Willard Grant, who worked tirelessly in the early days of Presbyterianism in Trinidad and Tobago. Rev. Swann and Rev. Kirkpatrick are honoured as the first principals of Hillview College, and Mr. Stephen Moosai-Maharaj as the first locally appointed Principal. Today, we also recognize the contribution of Mr. Stephen Alisharan as one of the early principals and of course, the namesake of one of the formidable sports houses at the school.
