👉 Dr. Michael Morris, DVM, MSc. PhD, FRCVS, Dipl.ECAR 👈

Dr. Morris has a DVM from the University of the West Indies School of Veterinary Medicine in 1995, a Residency at the University of Cambridge in Food Animal Practice , passed his MRCVS and gained an MSc in Livestock Health and Production from the RVC in London, all in 2002. He has worked in private farm animal practice throughout the UK before winning a Wellcome Trust Fellowship to gain his PhD in Dairy Cattle Stress and subfertility at Leahurst, University of Liverpool in 2008. Subsequently, he returned to Trinidad as a lecturer in Reproduction and became an ECAR diplomate in 2012. He is also a recognised Specialist with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

His research is mainly in stress and reproduction, particularly, the effects of stressors such as lameness, endometritis and transportation upon ruminant fertility.

Dr. Morris has lectured widely in veterinary schools around the world. At present, he sits on the Examination Committee for ECAR. In 2023 he was awarded a Fellow of the RCVS on the basis of Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice, the first person from the Caribbean.

The University of the West Indies - School of Veterinary Medicine (The UWI-SVM), welcomes and supports the Government’s move towards quieter fireworks and drone light shows for Trinidad and Tobago’s 64th Independence Day celebrations. This is a positive step towards reducing the harmful effects associated with traditional loud fireworks. We are advocating for a “One Health” approach to our national celebrations.
The use of loud fireworks can have serious consequences on environmental health, including the health of animals and people in the communities where we live. The sudden, explosive noise causes intense fear, distress, and panic in pets, livestock, and wildlife, prompting animals to flee, become lost, or sustain severe and, in some cases, fatal injuries. Fireworks can also have a significant adverse impact on people, particularly the infirm and individuals who are especially sensitive to sudden, high-intensity noise. Greater consideration should therefore be given to the potential harm caused by loud fireworks and to the use of quieter or safer alternatives.
While quieter fireworks reduce noise-related impacts, they also contribute to air pollution and leave chemical residues and debris that contaminate soil and water. Drone and other light shows eliminate many of these concerns but may still disturb some animals, particularly wildlife, because of intense or unfamiliar light and aerial activity.
From an animal welfare perspective, the ideal scenario would be to host celebrations without fireworks or intense light shows. Where these displays are used, quieter and less disruptive options should be encouraged.
We also encourage animal owners to remain vigilant and ensure their animals are kept safe during the celebrations, as traditional loud fireworks may still be used privately in surrounding communities.
The UWI-SVM supports joyful celebrations of Trinidad and Tobago's Independence while encouraging responsible choices that protect our animals, communities, and environment, in keeping with the "One Health" approach.

The 4th Joint AITVM-STVM international Conference was hosted by the University of the West Indies School of Veterinary Medicine at The University of the West Indies St Augustine Campus from June 23to 26 2026. The theme Resislient Futures in Tropical Veterinary Medicine set the tone for the meeting. Dr Joy St John in her keynote address called delegates to action to become architects of Caribbean resilience, asserting that the region’s success in implementing One Health can serve as a global model for managing interconnected health, environmental, and geopolitical challenges. The Office of Campus Principal’s Main Salon and grounds at the St Augustine Campus were transformed into a canvas where art and science intersected at the 4th Joint AITVM STVM International Conference. Delegates presented their scientific work and were introduced to the rich culture of Trinidad and Tobago through the food, music, indigenous characters, dance and oral tradition. Thank you to the Minstry of Education Primary Schools Music Program and the students and parents for being our guests artists. The conference took place at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus from 23 - 26 June 2026. The next meeting of the Society of Tropical Veterinary Medicine will be held in Mexico in 2028. Osteoarthritis impacts not only the welfare and quality of life of affected animals but also presents significant emotional and financial challenges for caregivers. This engaging two-part presentation will explore a multimodal approach to OA management, combining the latest evidence in pain control with practical rehabilitation and lifestyle strategies.

Participants will gain valuable insights into the causes and diagnosis of OA, pain recognition and assessment, current pharmacological treatment options, and the role of joint-support therapies and nutraceuticals. The session will also examine rehabilitation techniques, nutrition, therapeutic exercise, hydrotherapy, photobiomodulation, shockwave therapy, environmental modifications, and other non-pharmacological interventions that can improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life.
