🌟 SEA Preparation Starts Earlier Than You Think!
When we talk about SEA preparation, many people think it begins when a child enters Standard 4.
I don't believe that.
The foundation for SEA success begins much earlier—even in the Infant classes
As an SEA teacher and also a parent, these are some of the things I consciously practise with my own 7-year-old daughter.
📚 TIP #1: Literacy is the foundation of academic success.
Before we worry about SEA past papers, exam techniques and memorising information, a child needs to be able to read fluently and understand what they are reading.
A child who struggles to read will naturally struggle across Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.
đź“– TIP #2: Encourage a LOVE for reading.
Reading shouldn't always feel like homework.
My daughter is currently enjoying Enid Blyton's *Popular Rewards* series, and I allow her to read books that genuinely interest her.
The goal is to help her see reading as something enjoyable—not something she only does because "Mommy said so." ❤️
✍🏽 TIP #3: Don't just ask, "Did you understand the story?"
After she reads a short story, I ask her questions such as:
• Who were the characters?
• Where did the story take place?
• What problem or conflict occurred?
• What did the character do to solve the problem?
• What happened at the end?
Then I ask her to tell me the story back in her own words.
This simple activity is developing much more than reading.
She's practising comprehension, sequencing, vocabulary, recalling details, identifying narrative elements and expressing her ideas verbally—all skills that will become increasingly important as she progresses through primary school.
And yes, she is currently performing in the 90s academically, but I'm not sharing this to say that every child needs to be in the 90s at age 7.
My point is this:
SEA preparation is not something we should suddenly start worrying about in Standard 4.
The habits and foundational skills we build in the early years matter.
So if you have a child in Infants, Standard 1, 2 or 3, don't wait until Standard 4 to start preparing.
