Let's examine a passage from this book, "Narcissism Has No Face."
Coping mechanisms are strategies or behaviors that people use to manage stress, regulate emotions, and find relief. They can be conscious or unconscious, and their effectiveness can vary depending on the situation and individual. Here are some coping mechanisms and their effects often deployed by individuals:
• Distancing: Distancing oneself from a situation, whether physically or emotionally, can be a coping mechanism to find peace or prevent escalating tension. It can be a positive strategy as long as it doesn't lead to prolonged isolation or avoidance of necessary interactions.
• No Contact: No contact refers to completely cutting off communication and interactions with a toxic person or situation. It can be a severe form of distancing, employed to protect oneself from further harm or toxicity.
• Crying: Crying can serve as a coping mechanism to express and release emotions. It can provide relief and catharsis in both positive and negative situations, such as sadness, disappointment, joy, or overwhelming emotions.
• Talking/Psychotherapy: Engaging in conversation, whether with a trusted person or a professional therapist, can be a positive coping mechanism. It allows individuals to share their thoughts, emotions, and problems, gaining insight, support, and relief in the process.
• Self-Harming: Self-harming, such as cutting or self-inflicted injuries, is a negative coping mechanism. It is an unhealthy way of dealing with emotional pain and trauma. It can serve as a temporary distraction from underlying pain but does not address the root causes and can lead to further harm.
• Addictions: Substance abuse, such as drugs or alcohol, and behavioral addictions like gambling or s*x addiction, can serve as coping mechanisms to temporarily escape or numb emotional pain. These addictive behaviors stimulate the release of dopamine, (one of the happy hormones), providing a temporary sense of pleasure or relief. However, over time, addictions can have severe negative consequences for individuals and their relationships, leading to physical, psychological, and social harm.
• Narcissism is also a coping mechanism, particularly in the context of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It’s a very powerful and complex mechanism but, hugely effective in helping the afflicted one cope with the world around them. Individuals with NPD develop narcissistic traits as a way to cope with deep-seated insecurities and, a lack of control over their environment.
It is also used as a protective or defence mechanism by the afflicted one as needed, to maintain a sense of self-worth and control. While narcissism may provide relief for the afflicted individual, it often causes significant harm to their relationships and interactions with others.
The development of narcissism is believed to be influenced by two constructs, a genetic predisposition and the lack of control environment. Genetic predispositions may contribute to certain personality traits, while the environment, including childhood experiences and upbringing, plays a pivotal role in shaping and reinforcing narcissistic tendencies.
