WHAT DOES GOVERNANCE HAVE TO DO WITH CHARACTER?

In this reflection, Dr. Dennis Jaggernauth shares his response to the perspective presented by Ms. Kamla Rampersad-De Silva, CEO of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute, at the S.S. Sustainable Systems conference.

Governance is often framed through an academic or institutional lens.

But Ms. Rampersad-De Silva offered a refreshing, out-of-the-box perspective—connecting governance to something much more fundamental:

Character. Integrity. And the choices we make when no one is watching.

For Dr. Jaggernauth, that perspective was particularly powerful in a room filled with young leaders and emerging professionals.

Because governance isn't only about systems, policies and compliance.

It begins with the person behind the decision.

And the leaders we develop today will determine the integrity of the institutions we build tomorrow.

TRANSFORMATION HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE ARE BROUGHT INTO THE CONVERSATION.

As a John Maxwell Certified transformational life coach, I have learned that lasting transformation begins when people can see themselves in the message.

Today's Youth Transforming Caribbean Procurement workshop hosted by S.S. Sustainable Systems NPO demonstrated exactly that.

CEO Reyad Mohammed created more than a conference. He created an experience—one that connected procurement, sustainability and human potential through a people-centred narrative.

Too often, sustainability conversations become dominated by GHG statistics, research, treaties and technical language.

Today, we saw another approach.

Strategically selected speakers from across the procurement ecosystem brought the **3Ps—People, Planet and Profit—**to life through interaction, storytelling and engagement.

And what impressed me most?

The youth were not merely in the audience. They were helping to build the experience.

Planning. Coordinating. Executing.

That is leadership development in action.

I was honoured to be part of the ecosystem alongside Tropi-Mulch Ltd, LinkUP Waste Resource Management, IKAW Composting and Dr. Rondell Hamilton of ROAR, while connecting with indigenous stakeholders, sustainability advocates, procurement professionals and representatives of Miss Earth International.

From a leadership perspective, this is the lesson:

You don't transform systems by simply giving people information. You transform systems by connecting people to purpose—and empowering them to participate in the transformation.

Today wasn't just about procurement.

It was about people, purpose, potential and partnerships.

And when those four forces align, we don't just change what people do—we change what they believe is possible.

🏏 FROM THE PODIUM TO THE PITCH... GRAEME THOMSON OF WORLD DIGITAL GOVERNANCE BATTED LIKE THE WEST INDIES OF THE '70s & '80s! 🇳🇿🏏🇹🇹

At CAIF 2026, many brilliant minds stepped up to the crease to speak about Artificial Intelligence. But only a few truly held the audience captive.

One of them was Graeme Thomson of World Digital Governance, a proud New Zealander with a deep love for cricket, whose presentation wasn't just informative—it was a masterclass in connection.

As someone passionate about transformational communication, I, Dr. Dennis Jaggernauth, couldn't let the opportunity pass. I asked him a simple question:

"What's your secret?"

His response? He bowled me over.

He shared a few clues:
🎯 Find a point of connection.
🤝 Discover common ground.
👤 Speak as if you're connecting with just one person in the audience.

Now, here's something you'll notice in this interview...

I accidentally mispronounced Graeme's name.

Could we have edited it out? Absolutely.

But we intentionally left it in.

Why?

Because even the best communicators sometimes bowl a no-ball... score a duck... or drop a catch. The lesson isn't about being perfect—it's about having the courage to show up, step up, and keep playing your innings.

Like the legendary West Indies cricket teams of the '70s and '80s, greatness isn't built on a flawless scorecard. It's built on resilience, confidence, and the willingness to face the next ball.

One of the greatest values of attending CAIF 2026 isn't just hearing the keynote presentations—it's engaging in meaningful conversations with the people who are shaping the future.

I had the privilege of connecting with our Caribbean neighbour, Steven Williams of Data Management & Advisory Services, and I asked him a simple question:

"What do you believe are the biggest hurdles to AI implementation across the Caribbean?"

His answer was both insightful and thought-provoking.

Two words stood out:

🔹 Culture
🔹 Trust

Technology, on its own, is never enough. The real transformation begins when people are prepared to embrace change, trust not just a new system but more importantly our Caribbean brothers and Sisters, and cultivate a culture that encourages innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.

As a transformational coach, I believe leadership starts with listening. Every conversation is an opportunity to challenge assumptions, broaden perspective, and discover the ideas that can move our region forward.

This morning at CAIF 2026, I had the privilege of sharing another special moment—this time alongside my son, Matthew.

As Day 2 opened with the Youth Delegate Moot (Debate), I sat back, listened, and smiled with pride as these young leaders tackled the motion: "Cyber insurance will improve AI security standards more effectively than government regulation."

What impressed me wasn't simply the arguments. It was the confidence, the composure, the structure, and the courage to stand before an audience and defend a position with clarity and respect.

I've always believed that public speaking is about far more than delivering words. It's about developing leaders who can think critically, communicate effectively, and influence positive change. Today, our Caribbean youth demonstrated exactly that.

My sincere appreciation to the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and. UWI St. Augustine for investing in our young people and giving them a platform where their voices matter. These are the conversations that will shape the future of AI, cybersecurity, and our region.

To every young person who step onto this stage today—you didn't just participate in a debate. You helped shape tomorrow.

"Is the biggest barrier to AI really technology... or our mindset?" 🤖

As Day 1 of the Caribbean Artificial Intelligence Forum (CAIF 2026) came to a close, one theme kept emerging: the greatest constraint to AI adoption in the Caribbean may not be the technology itself—it may be the cultural and mindset shift required to embrace it.

I posed this question to my mentor, Dr. Dennis Jaggernauth of JAGGS Next Level Impact.

As a transformational coach, his response was both practical and reassuring: meaningful change begins with a shift in perspective, challenging limiting beliefs, stepping outside our comfort zones, and choosing to see opportunity instead of uncertainty.

If AI is to transform the Caribbean, the transformation must first begin within us.
