We are pleased to announce that our faculty member Dr Umut Can Adısönmez has contributed to a working paper published by ELIAMEP. Drawing on his participation in the ISA 2026 roundtable, his section titled “From the Abraham Accords to a Turkish-led Quartet: Towards a New Order in the Middle East?” examines the implications of the Iran War on Turkish foreign policy.

This week, our PSIR 461 Politics of Memory students, led by Devrim Sezer, visited the İzmir Jewish Heritage Project as part of the course’s exploration of different forms of forgetting and remembrance.

Moving beyond the classroom, students put theory into practice as they examined the layered histories of both İzmir and Türkiye through guided observation and field-based analysis. Visits to synagogues and traditional Jewish houses (cortijos) provided insight into the politics of memory in practice.

Students also reflected on how cultural heritage and collective memory are preserved, interpreted, and sometimes underrepresented or overlooked in public space and political narratives.

We are excited to announce the publication of a new co-authored article by our faculty member Umut Can Adısönmez in the Southeast European and Black Sea Studies (SSCI-Q1) journal: “The abject other in Turkish politics: populist securitization, affect, and the Victory Party.”

In this new article, Adısönmez collaborated with Ceren Melis Kıcıroğlu (Istanbul University) and Erman Ermihan (Bilkent University), exploring the populist securitization of migration in Turkey. It examines this case through Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection, claiming that refugees are discursively constructed as the ‘abject other,’ contaminating the imagined national body.

The findings of this study also reveal an interesting paradox: far-right actors in Turkey remain electorally weak yet discursively hegemonic, illuminating affect-driven populist securitization in non-Western contexts and its global implications.

Our faculty members Umut Can Adısönmez and Serhun Al are in the United States this week. They are attending International Studies Association (ISA) meeting in Columbus, Ohio. Their panels focused on new geopolitical dimensions in the Middle East and ontological security, in which our professors discussed the changing dynamics of state behaviour and foreign policy in the transitioning world order.
