Interactional Challenges in Open Schooling Practices – ESERA 2025 Presentation
On August 26, 2025, from 17:00 to 18:30, the ICSE Science Factory will take the stage at the 16th Conference of the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA 2025) in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Our paper, “Interactional Challenges in Open Schooling Practices”, will be presented in Session S07.06: Argumentation and Critical Thinking in Science Education: Exploring Effective Approaches.
This session will explore how schools, educators, students, and communities navigate and overcome interactional barriers in open schooling environments.
By examining these real-world challenges, we aim to contribute practical insights and strategies for fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement in science education.

🌟 Opening Up Schools, Shaping the Future! 🌟
On June 26, 2025, the ICSE Science Factory brought together educators, students, and community members at the University of Education Freiburg under the inspiring theme “Opening Up Schools, Shaping the Future.”
💡 Highlights from the day:
✅ Prof. Dr. Thomas Seifert’s keynote on how climate change is transforming forest ecosystems
✅ Rotteck-Gymnasium students’ creative projects on environmental challenges, mathematics, and 3D printing
✅ Fun and inspiring workshops – “Designing Jigsaw Lamps” & “Molecular Cuisine – From Michelin-Star Restaurant to Nursing Home”
✅ Engaging panel and “World Café” discussions on connecting schools with their communities
It was a day full of ideas, collaboration, and inspiration — proving once again that when schools open their doors, they open new possibilities for the future.
