The Eratosthenis's experiment outside Larissa's Municipal Gallery today March21st Spring Equinox the right day for counting the perimeter and the radius of Earth in a simplified way! The local noon and the shorter shade of the ruler was at 12.33 p.m. By dividing the length of the shade and of the ruler we found the tan φ , where φ equals the angle between the sun ray and the zenith direction of the place. Then with a calculator we found the arctan( lengh_shadow/ lengh_ruler)=φ. This φ is also equal to the angle between the radius of the earth at the place and the radius at the equator. Knowing through google Earth the distance d between the place and the spot that the relevant meridian crosses the equator (the sunray is almost vertical to this spot) we can count the perimeter of Earth from the analogy φ/ d= 360 degrees/ perimeter_Earth. We had a very near result to the real one!!! Then we found the radius of the Earth by dividing the perimeter with 2π. Success!!!
The Mayor of Larissa who happened to be there for a press release took photos with our whole team! Real journalists will refer to our Erasmus project in Mass Media and İnternet! Thanks Eratosthenis! You made us famous!
