سألني الفضائي:
"مَن علّمكم معنى النجاح؟ مَن أقنعكم أنّ قيمتكم تُقاس بالشهرة والمال والانتباه؟ مَن جعلكم تخافون الصمت… وتدمنون الضجيج؟"

لم أعرف لماذا شعرتُ بالخوف عندما تخيّلتُ نفسي بلا شاشةٍ… بلا ضوضاءَ… بلا شيءٍ يُشتّتني عن نفسي، حاولتُ الرد:
"لكنّ الناس ما تزال تختار."

التفت إليّ ببطءٍ:
"وهل يختار المدمن حقًّا؟"

ثم سأل:
"إذا استطاع أحدهم أنْ يحدد ما تحبه... وما تكرهه... وما تخشاه... فهل يحتاج فعلًا إلى أنْ يحكمك بالقوة؟"

اقتربت المحاكاة أكثرَ؛ رجلٌ يفتح هاتفه عشرات المرات بلا وعيٍ، امرأةٌ تنهار نفسياً لأنّ الغرباء لم يعجبوا بصورتها، موظفٌ يبيع صحته وعمره ليشتري حياةً أقنعوه أنّها النجاح.

ثم قال الفضائي بصوتٍ منخفضٍ:
"أنتم لا تحكمون العالم، ولا حتى أنفسكم."

ارتجف شيءٌ داخليٍّ؛ لأنّني أدركتُ فجأةً أنّ كثيرًا من قراراتي لم تكن حرةً كما كنتُ أتخيل. كم فكرةٍ آمنتُ بها لأنّ الجميع آمنوا بها؟ كم رغبةٍ ظننتها “أنا”… بينما زُرعت داخلي ببطءٍ؟ وكم موقفٍ دافعتُ عنه بحماسةٍ… فقط لأنّ العالم حولي أقنعني أنّني على حق؟

عاد صوت الفضائي:
"الإنسان الذي لا يستطيع السيطرة على خوفه… أو شهوته… أو حاجته للقبول… لا يملك سيادةً حقيقيةً."

ثم تبدلت المحاكاة مرةً أخرى..........

The stories of the Prophets in the Qur’ān are not for entertainment; they are living examples of human resilience. When one-third of the Qur’ān is devoted to these stories, it is because they provide a guide for surviving the storms of life.

One of the most moving examples is the cry of the Prophet Jacob (AS). Facing betrayal from his own sons and the loss of his beloved Yusuf, he did not waste his energy arguing with their lies. He simply said:

"And Allāh is the one sought for help (Al-Musta'ān) against that which you describe." (Sūrat Yusuf, 12:18)

When our lives become a storm of lies or loss, as is often the case, we do not need to stay trapped in what others say about us. We go straight to the Musta‘ān because He remains the only one capable of changing the outcome.

There is a more subtle form of arrogance we often overlook: the belief that worshiping Allāh is easy, or that we can do it entirely on our own strength. We tell ourselves, ‘I have high intentions; I really want to be good,’ as if our willpower alone is enough to reach the Divine.

But the Qur’ān offers a firm caution against this self-congratulation:

“So do not claim purity for yourselves; He is most knowing of who fears Him.”
(Sūrat an-Najm, 53:32)

This is a reminder that we cannot ‘purify’ ourselves through sheer effort. We might have the desire to worship God, but our human limitations—our ego, our fatigue, and our distractions—will always get in the way until He clears the path for us.

Allāh underscores this reality elsewhere:

“They have not appraised Allāh with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.”
(Sūrat az-Zumar, 39:67)

When we realize the magnitude of Allāh, we suddenly see our own smallness. We realize that we do not just "choose" to worship; we are allowed to worship.

This is why we immediately follow our claim, "It is You we worship," with the admission of our helplessness: ‘And it is You we ask for help.’

فجأةً وجدت نفسي داخل ما يشبه حلبة الصراع الرومانية القديمة؛ ظهر أمامي رجلٌ من القرون الوسطى يسجد للتاج، ثم ظهر ثائرٌ فرنسيٌّ يسجد للعقل، ثم شيوعيٌّ يسجد للحزب، ثم ليبراليٌّ معاصرٌ يسجد للسوق. ثم بدأت الأسماء تتبدل فوق الرؤوس باستمرارٍ، لكن الحركة نفسها لا تتغير: الجميع يركعون.

قال الفضائي:
"لم أجد حضارةً في جميع الأكوان التي درستها بلا معبودٍ، وجدتُ فقط حضاراتٍ تختلف في اسم المعبود."

خفضتُ بصري نحو معصميّ؛ كانت السلاسل حقيقيةً… لكن الكدمات الأقدم لم تكن منها، بل من أفكارٍ ورثتُها قبل أنْ أتعلم كيف أشكّ فيها، فأنا لم أختر معظم قناعاتي الأولى عن الدين والسياسة… بل ورثتُها كما يرث الناس لغاتهم ولهجاتهم.

Growing up, there was a strong emphasis on the story of Ādam (AS) and Iblīs (the name used in the Qur’ān for the fallen being, Satan).

No matter the angle the speaker took, they always landed on one word: Kibr (arrogance). We were taught that this was the root of all evil—the single trait that cast Iblīs out of Heaven.

He believed his nature was superior, and that his logic was enough—effectively placing himself beyond the need for Divine guidance.

As I reflect on this now, reaching the second half of Verse 5—Wa Iyyaaka Nasta‘īn—I realize how deeply this speaks directly to our modern struggle.

We live in a culture that promotes individuality and self-reliance as if it were the pinnacle of civilization. We are told that we are the sole masters of our fate and the captains of our souls.

While this may sound empowering on a poster, it is actually the engine of modern performance anxiety. If everything depends entirely on us—our success, our image, our morality—then every stumble is a total catastrophe.

If I am the only one holding up my world, what happens when my arms get tired?

Repeating ‘And it is You we ask for help’ in every rakʿah is the ego's daily reality check. It is the soul’s admission that it cannot even breathe, let alone be good, without a constant infusion of Divine strength. It acknowledges we are inconsistent, fragile, and easily overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the path ahead.

By asking for help, we do what Iblis refused to do: we choose to be guided.
