The Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies (DAGRI), with the support of the IHEA Foundation (https://fondazioneihea.it) and in collaboration with the University of Carthage, and the Universities of the Foundation (the University of Bologna, the University of Florence, the Politecnico di Milano, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Padua and Sapienza University of Rome) established the Blended Intensive Training Program entitled "Water management and remote sensing for sustainable agricultural intensification” tailored for Ph.D. students and researchers
The program, focused on innovative concepts and technologies for the sustainable management of water resources, includes integrated training on the link between water and food security. It will be structured with:
· a series of online sessions (remote seminars) from 16th November to 8th December 2023
· a week of in-person training in Tunis in January 2024 at the University of Carthage, provisionally at the Institut National Agronomique de Tunisie (INAT).
The Program will cover the following topics:
· Sustainable water resources management, water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus and ecosystem services (module WEFE)
· Use of non-conventional waters for sustainable water management (module NCW)
· Assessment of the impacts of climate change on water systems (module CCWS)
· Remote sensing technologies and applications for water management (module RSWM)
At the end of the Program, participants will be able to:
· Constitute and/or consolidate specific knowledge around water-related challenges according to the topics addressed
· Achieve a global dimension in their research on water management and sustainable agriculture in a current context of accelerating socio-environmental changes
· Build a network of potential contacts with international experts
The maximum number of participants is 26, the program will not start with less than 10 participants.

Position Announcement: Post-Doctoral Researcher for Innovative Agricultural Nitrogen Management Project (European Project)
Project Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Post-Doctoral Researcher to join our research team for an exciting and groundbreaking project focused on revolutionizing agricultural nitrogen management. The primary objective of this project is to develop a low-cost and practical agronomic strategy to reduce nitrogen fertilizer usage in agricultural systems, ranging from small to large farms. This strategy aims to mitigate nitrate leaching into soil and water bodies while maintaining or even enhancing crop production and quality. The project utilizes a natural nitrification inhibitor (NBI) approach in combination with cutting-edge information technologies (TIC) to achieve these goals.
Project Specific Objectives:
As a Post-Doctoral Researcher, you will contribute to the following key project objectives:
• Understanding Nitrogen Dynamics: Gain insights into the spatial and temporal distribution of nitrates in various agricultural systems, including soil, plants, drainage solutions, and groundwater. Investigate the nutritional requirements of different crop varieties across diverse edapho-climatic conditions.
• Technology Development: Calibrate and validate nitrate monitoring technologies for real-time assessment of crop nutritional status. Utilize low-cost tools like selective nitrogen electrodes and satellite imagery to provide farmers with convenient, accurate, and real-time data.
• Natural Nitrification Inhibitors (NIs): Investigate and select specific plants that naturally secrete NIs (NBI plants). Study their behavior and effectiveness in slowing down the conversion of ammonium to nitrate.
• Implementation and Validation: Introduce NBI plants into crops and assess their impact on nitrogen management. Conduct pilot studies to test scalability, reproducibility, and transferability of the new agronomic strategy across different production surfaces and geographic areas.
• Decision Support System (DSS): Develop a user-friendly DSS that integrates data from various sources, including plot data, leaf sap nitrate analysis, and satellite imagery. Provide farmers with valuable insights into optimal fertilizer and irrigation practices while minimizing nitrate leaching.
• Lifecycle and Economic Analysis: Perform a comprehensive analysis of the economic viability of our nitrogen management strategy. Assess its ability to reduce carbon and fertilizer footprints, its ease of use, and its applicability to diverse Mediterranean farming scenarios.
• Training: Provide training to farmers on the utilization of native NBI plants, nitrogen selective electrodes, and the developed DSS.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Agriculture, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or related fields.
• Strong background in agronomy, soil science, and nitrogen management.
• Experience in conducting field experiments and data analysis.
• Proficiency in using technology and data analytics tools.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated ability to publish research findings in reputable scientific journals.
