Have you heard of Timor-Leste, Asia’s newest and poorest country? Meet Bella Galhos, the inspirational leader helping Timor-Leste adopt a sustainable future and overcome the damage caused by decades of conflict.

Though their country gained independence, the people of Timor-Leste (formerly known as East Timor) continue to struggle with poverty, malnutrition, excessive urbanization and environmental degradation. On the other hand, there is great, untapped potential in its young people and natural environment.

After years of fighting for its independence, Bella - a former child soldier, refugee and advisor to the President - has a vision to transform her country. With its natural abundance, Bella believes that the key to true independence for this oil-dependent country is through sustainably harnessing the rich potential of their natural environment. But to inspire any kind of change, she needed to lead by example.

So in 2015 she founded Leublora Green Village, Maubisse (LGV) - Timor-Leste’s first and only model of sustainable community development. Located in Maubisse amongst the stunningly beautiful mountains of Timor-Leste, its mission is to lead the sustainable transformation of Timor-Leste through three strategies: 1) environmental education, 2) eco-tourism and 3) agriculture.

Our Leublora Green School provides free environmental education to local children, healing the wounds left from decades of conflict and nurturing environmentally-conscious future leaders;

Our Leublora Green Villas and Organic Restaurant are a model of eco-tourism in a country that has yet to develop a tourism industry;

Our Women’s Organic Farming Cooperative promotes the economic viability and environmental sustainability of organic farming in Timor-Leste, while empowering local Timorese women.

Through this combined approach, Leublora Green Village, founded by Bella and her partner Iram, is opening an inspiring new path for the country and becoming a model for sustainable development for countries around the world.

Visit our website and follow us on social media to find out how to support our project, including staying in our eco villas and eating at our organic restaurant when you visit and supporting the Leublora Green School. And by simply liking and sharing this video you can help us reach more people!

More on Leublora

While in Timor-Leste we were lucky enough to visit Leublora Green Village, Maubisse. Focusing on sustainable farming and ecotourism, the initiative was founded by Bella Galhos and Iram Saeed. Through the education and support provided by their Green School and Farming Co-op, they aim to empower and support women, youth and the community by addressing economic, social, agricultural and environmental issues. We wrote about Leublora Green Village and our journey to the small, mountainous village of Maubisse for Destinations Magazine. Read it now >>

If you ever travel to Timor-Leste (which, as you can probably tell, we strongly recommend) pay Leublora Green Village a visit and stay in their beautiful eco-villas and enjoy their onsite restaurant; the profits from both are reinvested in their Green School and Farming Co-op.

Thank you to Bella and Iram for their help and generosity, and to John for showing us around Maubisse.
