KOICA Alumni Association of Timor-Leste (KAATL) successfully organized a Workshop on Solid Waste Management on 11 September 2025 at Sentru Treinamentu Vocasional Juventude, Comoro.
The event brought together government representatives (Dili Municipal Authority), NGOs (HASATIL), youth groups (Mudansa...), and the private sector (Caltech) to share insights on policies, local action plans, youth advocacy, and business-led recycling solutions.
This collaborative session emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral action in tackling waste challenges that affect public health, urban cleanliness, and environmental sustainability in Dili. It also showcased the role of youth in leading innovative solutions and raising awareness on sustainable practices.
Following the workshop, participants joined a site visit to Caltechโs recycling facility, where they learned firsthand about waste-to-value initiatives and corporate responsibility in solid waste management.
Together, these efforts highlight the growing momentum to strengthen waste management systems in Timor-Leste and build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.

KOICA Alumni Association Restoration Activity
In alignment with KAATLโs commitment to environmental sustainability and community development, this yearโs reforestation initiative will shift its focus from direct mangrove planting to equipment support of the local reforestation efforts. KAATL will provide essential equipment and materials to support the operations of the Permanent Nursery Center of Maubara, which plays a critical role in producing tree seedlings for reforestation and restoration activities throughout the region.
This support aims to improve the nursery's ability to nurture young trees, increase seedling production efficiency, and ensure long-term impact on environmental conservation efforts. The equipment support will include electric water pump, hose, gardening cart, gardening tools, and other essential items.

Have you ever wondered how community voices, especially those of youth can be heard on a global stage?
The KOICA Alumni Association Timor-Leste (KAATL) and Sustainable Ocean Alliance Timor-Leste were proud to organized the Citizens Dialogue as part of the Planetary Ocean Assembly, a platform where individuals were empowered to share their ideas, perspectives, and concerns freely.
Next month, the SOA Timor-Leste Youth Delegation will represent our island nation at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC). They will carry the voices of coastal communities, whose livelihoods are deeply tied to the ocean, to a global audience.
How did this collective action begin?
In the two weeks leading up to the Citizens Dialogue, SOA Timor-Leste, KAATL, and APMTL conducted a Marine Environmental Education Socialization program across junior and senior high schools in four municipalities. The campaign engaged more than 558 students from over 9 schools, raising awareness about the importance of ocean conservation among the next generation.
A heartfelt thank you to KOICA Timor-Leste Office (KOICA ๋ํฐ๋ชจ๋ฅด์ฌ๋ฌด์) for supporting and making this impactful initiative possible.
