Following on from the successful MIDSEA Summer School 2025 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, we are back! Infectious disease modellers from the leading universities in Southeast Asia are jointly organising the MIDSEA Summer School and Symposium 2026, scheduled to take place from 𝟴 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟮 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 in the city of 𝗞𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗸, hosted by the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. The School’s parallel tracks offer something for new and experienced modellers alike.

The cost to take part depends on the country income bracket (LMIC Lower and Middle Income Countries, or HIC High Income Countries): and the type of accommodation requested.

The accommodation + registration fees are:
LMIC: Single room: USD 650, shared/twin room: USD 500
HIC: Single room: USD 950, shared/twin room: USD 800

The registration fees for participation if you do not require accommodation are:
LMIC: USD 350
HIC: USD 650

A small number of scholarships will be available to participants from LMICs, to cover the registration fees and the accommodation fees. The scholarship does not cover travel to or from Kuching.

🚨 ESANID New Publication Alert! 🚨

Our latest study,
“How to utilise the limited supply of vaccines for Mpox Control in Thailand among High-Risk GBMSM”,
has now been published online.

This work highlights how mathematical modelling can support public health decision-making, particularly in optimizing vaccine allocation strategies under limited supply and evaluating the role of behavioural changes in controlling Mpox transmission in Thailand.

This study was made possible through a strong collaboration with the Department of Disease Control (DDC), Thailand, and our colleagues at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

At ESANID, we are committed to advancing infectious disease modelling to generate evidence that supports real-world policy and intervention strategies.

👏 ESANID First Kick-off Workshop!

On 20 February 2026, we organized the workshop
“Infectious Disease Modelling: From Concepts to Application”, hosted by the Faculty of Science, Naresuan University, in collaboration with the Phitsanulok Provincial Public Health Office and the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 2.

📢 This kick-off event marks the beginning of ESANID’s initiative to strengthen the integration of mathematical modelling, surveillance data, and policy decision-making. The program included expert lectures, hands-on sessions on building simple infectious disease models, and practical exercises on estimating key epidemiological parameters such as R₀ and Rₜ using real-world data.

The workshop featured no-code infectious disease modelling using SIRcraft — an interactive platform developed by Mahidol University and University of Bremen in collaboration with the Mahidol–Bremen Medical Informatics Research Unit, the Bremen Spatial Cognition Center, and VetAgro Sup, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation.

By removing programming barriers, SIRcraft enabled participants to explore epidemic dynamics, adjust parameters, and immediately visualize outcomes — making modelling accessible to public health practitioners and decision-makers.

This workshop reflects one of ESANID’s core missions: capacity building for researchers, public health professionals, and field practitioners. By strengthening modelling skills and analytical capacity, we aim to support evidence-based infectious disease preparedness and response in Thailand.

We’re excited to share our latest research published in Animals!

🔬 What’s this study about?
This study explores the microbial communities and biofilm-forming capacity in the reproductive tracts of cows, water buffaloes, and goats in Northeastern Thailand—an important but under-studied area in animal and reproductive health.

✨ Key highlights:
• Each animal species shows a distinct “microbial fingerprint” in the reproductive tract
• Cows were richer in beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium
• Water buffaloes and goats had higher prevalence of potential pathogens, including Brucella ovis and Helicobacter trogontum
• Most bacteria formed weak or non-adherent biofilms, suggesting limited resistance but potential persistence
• Biofilm-associated genes were detected and linked to early biofilm development

🌱 Why does this matter?
Understanding these microbial patterns can help improve reproductive health management, guide disease prevention strategies, and support sustainable livestock production—especially in local farming communities.
