Every Child Learns at Their Own Pace: The Beauty of Patience in Learning

When I was learning English as a child, I often compared myself to others. Some of my classmates spoke fluently, while I struggled to form sentences. There were days I felt behind, wondering, Why is it so easy for them but so hard for me?

But over time, I realized something important—learning is not a race. Just like how some children learn to walk at 10 months while others take their first steps at 18 months, every child learns in their own time, in their own way.

This lesson has deeply influenced my approach as an early childhood educator. I believe in respecting each child’s learning journey. Some children pick up language quickly, while others take longer. Some excel in reading, while others shine in creativity. What truly matters is that they feel safe, supported, and encouraged every step of the way.

As educators and caregivers, our role is not to rush children but to guide them with patience and trust in their natural abilities. The more we believe in them, the more they believe in themselves.

Teaching is the work of heart. It requires love, patience, and the understanding that every child is uniquely wonderful in their own way.

Learning Like a Child: The Magic of Imitation

One of the most powerful ways I learned English as a child wasn’t from a teacher or a textbook—it was from watching and imitating others.

I remember sitting in the lunchroom, observing how my friends ordered food. I listened to their tone, their expressions, the way they used simple phrases like, “Can I have…?” or “Thank you!” At first, I didn’t understand everything, but I mimicked their words, copying their rhythm and gestures. Little by little, my confidence grew.

Children are natural imitators. From their earliest days, they learn by watching adults and peers. Before they can even speak, they absorb the sounds, emotions, and actions around them. This is why the environment we create for children is so important. If we surround them with rich language, positive interactions, and engaging conversations, they will pick it up naturally—just like I did when learning English.

I always emphasize modeling language and behavior. If we want children to speak confidently, we must speak to them often, use expressive language, and encourage conversation. If we want them to be kind and respectful, we must show them what kindness looks like.
