Thailand issues five colours of passport. Here is what each one means.

Most people know the brown one. Thailand actually issues five different passports, each in its own colour, and each for a very different kind of traveller.

Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau recently broke them down.

Brown: the ordinary passport

This is the one nearly every Thai citizen carries. It is issued for tourism, study, work and general travel abroad, and comes with either five or ten years of validity.

Blue: the official passport

Issued to civil servants and state officials travelling on government business. It cannot be used for personal trips, and it is valid for no more than five years.

Green: temporary, monks and Hajj

The green book covers several special cases. It is issued for urgent travel, or when a passport is lost overseas. It is also the passport issued to Buddhist monks, and to Thai Muslims travelling to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage.

White: the emergency passport

This one has a single purpose, getting the holder back to Thailand. It is issued when a passport is lost or expires while the holder is abroad, and its validity is short, from six months to one year.

**Red: the diplomatic passport**

Issued to diplomats and senior figures representing Thailand. Ordinary citizens cannot obtain one. Depending on the holder's position and mission, it may carry privileges and immunities under international conventions.

**And the one colour that will land you in prison**

Whichever book you hold, a forged one is a serious crime in Thailand, for the maker, the seller and the user alike.

Forging a passport carries one to ten years in prison and a fine of 20,000 to 200,000 baht. Using a forged passport carries the same penalty. Selling or supplying forged passports is treated most severely of all, with three to twenty years in prison and a fine of 60,000 to 400,000 baht.

Offenders also face additional charges under the Immigration Act, and are blacklisted, which means being barred from entering countries around the world.

That last point is not theoretical. Thai immigration police have run repeated operations against document forgery rings in recent years, including a case at Suvarnabhumi involving falsified passports used to move people through the airport.

For most travellers,Your brown book is the only one you will ever need, and it is worth guarding carefully.
