Urban Development Institute Foundation (UDIF) is a group of involved citizens who are concerned about Chiangmai's growth without direction.We are an educational foundation, established in 2001, which formerly was the Chiangmai Urban Studies Center, founded in 1990. In February 2011, UDIF established the Creative Urban Solutions Center as a learning center and urban resource center for local and international students, Chiangmai residents, and tourists.

Sustainable Cities in Chiang Mai: A Case of a City in a Valley by Duongchan Apavatjrut Charoenmuang, edited by Carole Beauclerk and Tanet Charoenmuang, published by Urban Studies Section, Social Research Institute, Chiang Mai University.

Sustainable Cities in Chiang Mai: A Case of a City in a Valley is the fourth of the five-part "Sustainable City Project" series supported by the Heinrich Böll Foundation. This segment explores the province of Chiang Mai, examining the sustainability an unsustainability of this area's development. Folk wisdom, local beliefs, traditional lifestyles, and Buddhist philosophy in combination with strengths of the citizenry, this research proposes, has the potential to positively influence sustainable growth in Chiang Mai.

Cartoon Chiang Mai History, English Version by Isara Guntang, English Version by Duongchan Apavatjrut Charoenmuang, published by Urban Development Institute Foundation (Chiangmai).

The Third Edition of this cartoon details the history and development of Chiang Mai city in a medium accessible to adults and children alike. In addition to chronicling the establishment of Chiang Mai and its early existence, the cartoon is critical of the city's recent development pursued to support the growing tourist industry. Naming such issues as pollution, poverty, and poor public health, this book encourages readers to change behaviors and make sustainable choices in order to ensure a livable city for future generations. This book is also available in Thai, Lanna, Japanese, and French versions.

Clay House

A signature part of the learning center is our clay house. Built from clay, sawdust, rubber parts, and bits of fabric, the clay house is a humble but stylish abode. Have you ever seen a lampshade made out of plastic bottle caps? You can also purchase UDIF publications and products made entirely from recycled materials in this building!

Ruean Galae Room

Lanna people lived in beautiful wooden houses called "ruean galae." The Ruean Galae Room of the Huean Tonchoke house exhibits models of different types and styles of these constructions and explains their unique architectural features.

Huean Tonchoke

Experience the unique 80+ year old wooden Lanna-colonial style Huean Tonchoke house! Home to the Chiangmai Learning Center, this house is named for the large, old Tonchoke "good luck tree" growing in its front yard. This tree is thought to be the only one of its kind remaining in the inner city wall area.
