The Siemens-Schuckert R.VIII was a bomber aircraft designed and built in Germany from 1916. eroplane) for the Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches (Imperial German Flying Corps). In common with many of the other contemporary R projects, the R.VIII had all six engines inside the fuselage, where they were tended by mechanics, driving two tractor and two pusher propellers mounted between the mainplanes, via leather cone clutches combining gearboxes, shafts and bevel gearboxes. Two aircraft were built but only the first, R23/16, was completed.

New cardiac scanner, the first in Scotland, to benefit patients at NHS Grampian
A new scanner, the first of its kind in Scotland, has been unveiled by NHS Grampian.
The state-of-the-art technology, known as IQ SPECT CT, can quickly take 4D images of the heart and will benefit predominately cardiac patients with ischaemic heart disease.
Prof Roger Staff, head of Imaging Physics, said: “Ultimately, this world-class scanner will benefit our patients and their experience.
“Historically, cardiac scans, for instance, could take upwards of 15 minutes. With this new machine, they can now be complete in less than five minutes. The system helps improve patient comfort as people are required to stay still for less time. The technology can also work with lower doses of radiation, benefiting both the patient and saving resources.
“Quicker scan times also provide the potential, in future, for patient capacity to be increased – with more scans taking place in the same timeframe.
“The department is delighted with the new machine.”
Prof Staff said that Covid-19 restrictions had presented multiple challenges during the installation process.
“We had difficulties with the German installation team getting to the site and changes in standards brought about by the pandemic. However, we are very pleased with the final system,” he said.
“The new scanner, supplied by Siemens Healthineers, allows multiple multi-modality imaging, that is, two types of imaging at the same visit. The scanner allows imaging of the radioactive distribution of activity in the body representing the body's metabolism and function.”
“The demand for such examination increases with more patients being required to be imaged multiple times to assess response to therapy.
One of a handful IQ SPECT CTs currently used in the UK, the system at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is the first of its kind in Scotland.
Prof Staff added: “It represents a cutting-edge development for cardiac and cancer services in the region and keeps us at the forefront of diagnostic technology.”

The Type 212A submarine, also known as the Todaro class in Italy, is a highly advanced diesel-electric submarine with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens proton-exchange membrane (PEM) compressed hydrogen fuel cells. Its stealth characteristics are enhanced by non-magnetic steel and a special plastic cover to reduce detection risk. Designed for both coastal and open-sea operations, the Type 212A class has expanded the German Navy's operational range to Northern Europe, the North Atlantic, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Leading German software corporation SAP, on Wednesday, announced plans to set up a software development house in Pakistan with a capacity to train 5000 students.
At present, SAP is providing digital solutions to leading Pakistani companies in the public and private sector, enabling them to achieve higher growth. All major systems-related companies in Pakistan including Systems Limited, IBM and Siemens work with SAP.
While talking to a select group of journalists, SAP Country Managing Director, Saquib Ahmad explained that the company was in the process of acquiring regulatory approval to set up a Software Development Centre in Pakistan.
“We are hopeful to obtain all regulatory approvals from different institutions including the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) by next year,” he said. Regarding a possible waiver in taxes, Ahmad clarified that the company would follow the tax system in place and would not seek any waiver in this regard.
While the company had yet to identify a place at which the centre would be set up, Ahmad was confident it would “create job opportunities for the Pakistani youth”.
Explaining that the internet played a key role in providing digital services he said, “5G technology will boost businesses by implementing digital solutions. We need to work with the best practices followed worldwide and the Software Development Centre will help in this regard.”
While responding to a question regarding the security of sensitive information, he underscored that, “SAP ensures and controls security at all levels. We guarantee full compliance with all governmental protocols and ensure that all relevant information stays within Pakistan.”

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and industrial group Siemens on Monday unveiled the world's first automated, driverless train in the city of Hamburg, billing it as more punctual and energy efficient than traditional trains.
Four such trains will join the northern city's S-Bahn rapid urban rail network and start carrying passengers from December, using the existing rail infrastructure.
Other cities like Paris have driverless metros while airports often have automated monorail trains plying terminals, but those run on exclusive single tracks while the Hamburg train will be sharing tracks with other regular trains.
The project, which Siemens and Deutsche Bahn called a "world first", is part of a 60 million euro ($70 million) modernisation of Hamburg's rapid urban rail system.
Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz said automated trains offer "a more reliable" service "without having to lay a single kilometre of new track".
"We are making rail transport more intelligent," said Siemens CEO Roland Busch, estimating that automated trains can transport "up to 30 percent more passengers, significantly improve punctuality and save more than 30 percent energy".
Although the train is controlled through digital technology and fully automated, a driver will still be present to supervise journeys whenever there are passengers on board, the companies said in a statement.

The European Union is urgently looking to reach a deal on emergency energy guidelines after Gazprom announced on Monday it would further limit gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
From Wednesday on, flows to Germany would fall to 33 million cubic meters per day, according to Gazprom. This is just about 20% of the pipeline's actual capacity.
The Russian company stressed again that the cuts were due to ongoing equipment issues. CEO Alexei Miller said: "There is just no solution whatsoever yet. Siemens is saying nothing. They are trying to find solutions, but there are none."
Arriving for talks in Brussels, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said there was no technical reason. She said Russia's step was politically motivated and she is not alone.
Czech Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Sikela said: "Putin will continue to play his dirty games in misusing and blackmailing gas supplies." German Economy Minister Robert Habeck criticized in an interview with the German public broadcaster ARD that Russia "didn't even have the guts to say: 'We are waging an economic war with you'."
At the meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, EU energy ministers are expected to reach a deal on how the bloc could compensate the lower gas supplies. On the table is a EU proposal to curb gas use by 15% from August to March.
The target would be voluntary, but could be made binding in an emergency situation.
