Student Exchange & Cross-Cultural Research Program | China Visit (7–15 December)

From 7–15 December, students selected by the East–West Psychological Science Research Center from the Faculty of Psychology, Chulalongkorn University participated in a Student Exchange & Cross-Cultural Research Program at Wenzhou–Kean University, China, in collaboration with partner institutions in China and Indonesia.

The visit combined academic and cultural exchange, allowing students to engage in campus activities, research discussions, and a short blitz presentation at an academic forum, alongside faculty members and students from Wenzhou–Kean University and Ubaya University. These experiences provided valuable exposure to different academic environments and research cultures.

Beyond the visit, students are continuing their collaboration through joint research projects conducted across Thailand, China, and Indonesia, working with international teammates and faculty mentors. The program will run through May 2026, concluding with a final research symposium hosted by the Faculty of Psychology, Chulalongkorn University.

The East–West Psychological Science Research Center would like to extends sincere appreciation to our partner institutions and colleagues for their continued collaboration and support in making this possible. We look forward to sharing updates from this ongoing international collaboration.

The East-West Center would like to thank Dr. David B. Feldman for his insightful talk on “Hope, mindfulness, and well-being in Thailand and the US.” Dr. Feldman presented fascinating cross-cultural research, using cross-sectional correlational data, exploring how the relationship between mindfulness and hope is mediated differently across cultures.

Main findings revealed that in Thailand, mindfulness fosters a greater acceptance of suffering as natural and workable. This understanding statistically mediates the connection between mindfulness and greater hope. It allows for people to sustain agency, pathways, and goals even when difficulties arise.

In contrast, findings in the US show no reliable relationship between mindfulness and hope. This working hypothesis suggests this breakdown may occur since US culture may not reliably lead to the acceptance of suffering.

Dr. Feldman emphasized that cross-cultural research benefits both sides of the ocean, suggesting intriguing questions implied by this research for the future of hope interventions:

📌 Thai interventions: Could existing hope interventions be made maximally effective for Thai people by integrating the insight that suffering is normal and workable?

📌 US Hope Effectiveness: Would incorporating the acceptance of suffering increase the effectiveness of traditional hope interventions for Americans?

We extend our deep gratitude to Dr. David B. Feldman for his knowledge, time, and valuable collaborations with some of our very own Chula professors in the Faculty of Psychology! This exciting research opens doors to modifying interventions in both countries, and these ties demonstrate the strength of international psychological research. We look forward to hearing updates about Dr. Feldman’s longitudinal studies in the works.
