We are addressing child's health, survival and development barriers by empowering teachers to create the enabling and thriving environment

Education starts at home. School only continues the work.
Teachers Can’t Teach What Parents Refuse to Model

Every minute of a teacher’s day is packed with syllabus to finish, assessments to prepare, lessons to plan, work to submit...

So when do they have time to teach values, correct attitude, or build respect?

Respect, kindness, empathy, responsibility, these begin at home, not in the classroom.

Now what we see are
Classrooms where children know content, but not courtesy.
Students who are smart, but not self-controlled.

When a child interrupts, mocks, or disrespects authority, it’s not always about discipline, it’s about upbringing.

And no amount of lesson plans can fix what love, boundaries, and example were meant to build.

Teachers are educators, not replacements.
They can reinforce values, but they can’t create them.

So before we complain that “teachers don’t teach behavior,”
Let’s ask, are we modeling it at home?

Teachers can guide your child’s mind.
But parents need to shape the heart.

The Teacher as a Curriculum Designer

Today the role of a teacher extends far beyond delivering lessons. As teachers we are not just implementers of curriculum. We are curriculum designers, shaping the learning journey to meet the needs of their students and the demands of a changing world.

What It Means to Be a Curriculum Designer

A curriculum designer is someone who plans, organizes, and structures learning experiences. While national or state education boards may provide broad frameworks, it is the teacher who breathes life into these plan by deciding what to teach, how to teach it, and why it matters.

Teachers design curriculum when they:

1. Create lesson plans and learning activities

2. Choose relevant materials and resources

3. Adapt content to suit student abilities and interests

4. Integrate local culture, values, and real-world relevance

5. Assess learning outcomes and revise instruction accordingly

Key Responsibilities of Teachers as Curriculum Designers

1. Contextualizing Content
Teachers tailor curriculum to reflect the realities of their students. In Nigeria, for example, a teacher in Edo State might incorporate local history, language, or examples that resonate with the community.

2. Promoting Active Learning
Curriculum design involves selecting strategies that engage student like group work, debates, experiments, storytelling, and technology integration. This transforms passive learning into active exploration.

3. Aligning with Standards
While creativity is essential, teachers must also align their curriculum with national standards, learning objectives, and assessment benchmarks to ensure consistency and quality.

4. Responding to Change
Curriculum is not static. Teachers must revise and adapt their plans in response to new policies, societal shifts, technological advances, and student feedback.

Why Teachers Must Be Designers

- They know their learners best. Teachers understand the strengths, struggles, and aspirations of their students.

- They bridge theory and practice. Teachers translate abstract curriculum goals into concrete classroom experiences.

- They foster innovation. Teachers can experiment with new methods, tools, and interdisciplinary approaches.

- They ensure relevance. Teachers make learning meaningful by connecting it to students’ lives and futures.

The headteacher of a primary school said:

Whenever parents bring a child to register for Primary One in my school, I must first see the child myself. This helps me to check if everything about the child is fine—speaking, hearing, seeing, walking, and so on.

After that, I like to ask the child one question that I created many years ago. The question is:
“What is the color of a watermelon?”

Parents and even my fellow teachers are always surprised by this question, because I ask every new child the same thing. Many think that I do not have any other question to ask. But today, I want to explain the secret behind it.

The question looks very simple, but the way a child answers it shows me a lot about his or her character:

If the child says, “It is red,” most times it means he depends too much on his parents. He does not help them to buy or cut watermelon at home. He only sees it served in a plate, like food given to a guest.

If the child says, “It is green,” it usually means he helps his father to buy watermelon and also helps his mother to cut it at home.

If the child asks, “Do you mean the outside or the inside?” it shows he is very smart, curious, observant, and likes to ask questions or discuss matters.

If the child answers, “The outside is green and the inside is red,” it shows he is intelligent and observant but does not like to argue.

If the child gives a wrong answer, like “It is blue” or “It is yellow,” it means he cannot properly tell the difference between colors. Such a child will need special teaching and may give his teachers a hard time.

If the child hides behind his mother because of shyness, or waits for his parents to answer for him, it shows he needs special care and encouragement to build confidence and overcome shyness.

When I interview a candidate, I don’t rush to see the certificates or the skill set they parade.

*Skills* can be learned.

Certificates can be earned.

But *human* *attributes* , That’s where the real work is.

- I’m looking for *humility* , can you learn, unlearn, and relearn?

- I’m looking for *integrity* , will you still do the right thing when no one is watching?

- I’m looking for *empathy* , do you see people as humans, not just transactions?

- I’m looking for *resilience* , can you stand tall when life bends you?

Because at the end of the day, skills will open doors…

But *human* *attributes* will keep you in the room.

So, the next time you prepare for an interview, polish your skills, yes, but never forget your humanity.

That’s the *real* *CV* .

Keep being amazing 🤝

South Sudan’s 2024 secondary school exam results have once again put private institutions on top, but the trend has reignited a critical debate about the government’s role in supporting public school teachers and addressing the deep-seated issues undermining the education system.
