ENGLISH CLASS
TOPIC: Basic Composition Writing
Composition writing means putting down our ideas in clear, orderly, and correct language. In English, it is one of the most important skills because it shows how well a student can use words to express thoughts.
A composition is simply a piece of writing on a given topic. It may be long or short depending on the type, but it must always have meaning and order. To write a good composition, a student should learn how to arrange ideas step by step.
Types of Composition
There are four common types of composition writing:
1. Narrative Composition – This tells a story. It could be about real or imagined events. Example: “How I Spent My Last Holiday.”
2. Descriptive Composition – This type gives a picture in words. It describes a person, place, animal, or object so that the reader can imagine it clearly. Example: “My Best Friend.”
3. Expository Composition – This explains something. It gives information, teaches, or discusses an idea. Example: “The Importance of Education.”
4. Argumentative Composition – This type tries to convince the reader to accept a point of view. Example: “School Uniforms Should Be Abolished.”
Steps in Writing a Good Composition
1. Understand the Topic – Read the topic carefully and know what it requires. Do not write outside the subject.
2. Brainstorm Ideas – Think of points that fit the topic. You may jot them down.
3. Plan Your Work – Arrange your points in order. A good composition has three parts:
Introduction – The beginning of the essay. It introduces the topic and catches the reader’s attention.
Body – The middle of the essay. It develops the main points in clear paragraphs.
Conclusion – The ending of the essay. It sums up the ideas and gives a final thought.
4. Write in Simple Language – Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Avoid too many long sentences.
5. Revise Your Work – After writing, read through it.
