Duk Island Academy School Profile 2021
Brief History: A group of young intellectual youth from Duk County decided to establish a community-based school in Duk Islands to allow their fellow brothers and sisters to receive their right to education and indeed it was approved by Jonglei State Ministry of Education and General Instructions a few months before the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic in 2019. In history, Koyoom Primary school was established but haven’t achieved the desire mission because teachers weren’t fully accommodated, low payment due to the recent currency devaluation and high risks of staying in swampy areas. You can’t expect grade 10 or 12 teachers to stay in a confinement just to receive 1,800 to 2,500 SSP per month after 4-6 months without proper accommodation. They have families and huge responsibilities, therefore their failure to deliver as expected is understandable. But will this favour our young generation who are isolated from having access to education due to insecurity, flooding, hunger and other factors? This is the question we are answering as the citizens of these communities, and this is why Duk Island Academy was founded.

Our is a community where all children feel loved, respected and encouraged to develop to their fullest potential.
Our is to pro-high-quality education and childcare in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment that builds a foundation for life-long learning.
• To encourage independent thinking and self-directed learning in a child-centred environment. To provide learning experiences that develop life skills promoting self-discipline, effective problem solving, perseverance and concentration.
• To enhance self-esteem and the ability to value each person's worth through a happy, caring, enriching and secure environment.
• To develop the natural curiosity that children exhibit about themselves and their world, and use their curiosity to foster positive attitudes to learning.
• To continue developing the positive ethos and learning culture throughout the school community with a commitment to continual improvement and meeting the very highest expectations
• To develop the literacy, creativity and communication skills so necessary for pupils to access the curriculum and take a full part in society.
Happy 10th Independence Day Anniversary of South Sudan! 🇸🇸

Without a collective effort from the government of South Sudan and UNICEF South Sudan and other partners with their donor community, Duk Island Academy would have not reached its current status.
It is one of its kind in the history of South Sudan to bring education closer to the most affected communities by the flood, famine and high level of insecurity who are staying in Toiche areas along the river Nile.
According to the reports from the local authority in Duk County in 2020, over 1,000 children are missing schools due to the high level of insecurity and the recent flooding that has affected almost everyone within Duk County. So, the Duk Islands turn to be the shelter for those who need security protection and those who are lacking food. In that process, children can easily lose their rights of education as stipulated in South Sudan Constitution and other international treaties. According to the recent reports from the United Nations Security Council, 9 million are in dire needs of humanitarian’s assistance, including those who were displaced by the flooding, in Duk County families can easily assess Toiche/Islands for their safety and food security purposes.
These were some reasons why Koyoom didn’t achieve the goal needed.
A group of young people decided to create history by allowing their fellow brothers and sisters to receive their right to education by establishing a community-based school through the approval of the Jonglei State Ministry of Education and General Instructions. We have conducted some successful meetings with parents and other stakeholders in Toiche areas (Duk Islands) to give some little incentives to volunteer teachers who have decided to support the initiative at their free will, and indeed they have accepted.
In the last two weeks, over 200 pupils starting from P1 to P5 are attending their classes at Duk Island Academy.

We are very excited to inform you that Duk Island Academy was officially opened on 14th June 2021.
So far 150 pupils are registered in Moldova Island, and more than 250 others were registered from the nearest Long, Kiirnom, Flight camp, Mayen, Amech, Kawer and Kabek Islands.
As of now, 200 pupils are attending classes in Moldova Island in Duk County. (115 boys and 85 girls)
And in July, more than 300 others are expected to be enrolled from inaccessible minor islands at D.I.A.
The majority of these pupils are below 12 years of age, though few of them have 21-36 years and above.
Our professional teachers who have a strong educational background ranging from high school certificate, diploma and bachelor degree with 2-11 years experience in the education profession are doing their best in educating a brighter generation that will lift South Sudan into a new status in this current world of professionalism. Big up to you guys! The Great Team of Seven Members!
Last but not least, we are appreciating the leadership of Moldova Island for standing with us to achieve this great goal of supporting the isolated children who have not to receive their right to education as linked with insecurity and famine that displaced many families.
Moreover, you can't blame the parents who rescue their children from starvation and child abduction, because Toiche/Islands is the only source of protection from both insecurity and starvation. In that process, children can easily lose their rights of education as stipulated in South Sudan Constitution and other international treaties.
But who deserves to blame? This is the gap that Duk Island Academy is trying to fill!
We are very proud to have a very committed, hardworking, truthful and resourceful director in the name of Michael Ghai Tong Aroffe but without teamwork from the board members and our supporters nothing would have been achieved and, for sure we can't forget our headmaster Riak who have sacrifice himself to suffer in a confinement (one-way traffic, staying in one location for some months) without a proper salary just to raise the greatest future for his fellow brothers and sisters living in Hol-land (Toiche De Hol) deserves to be appreciated.
In a related field, we are also very delighted to appreciate the great work done by JDF (John Dau Foundation) in Moldova Island and the entire Toiche areas! Your sleepless nights and hard work throughout the days to serve the lives of those vulnerable children and vulnerable people at large is knowledgeable.
Moldova local authority, Community leadership and JDF, Your hospitality and warm reception is highly being recognised and appreciated by the team.
Thank you Deng Garang (Deng-Marap) and his team (Ater Bol, Manyuon and Mawut-Chaw Deng) for helping us in transporting our school materials without a single penny paid in the name of the transport fares.
