The English Language Institute held its weekly team meeting today chaired by the Director; Ms. Deka Mohamed. The meeting brought together the academic team to review key teaching and learning activities across the institute.

The main agenda items included unit coverage, the implementation of unit writing tasks and a plan for student Speaking Contest. The discussions focused on maintaining consistent academic progress and exploring opportunities for students to strengthen their writing and speaking skills.

Our weekly team meeting was held today at Km4 Campus and was chaired by the Curriculum Coordinator, Mr. Zakaria Hassan. The meeting focused on the institute’s regular academic operations and the effective delivery of daily teaching and learning activities.

During the meeting, instructors shared practical strategies for improving students’ reading and writing skills. These collaborative discussions allow our team to learn from one another and continuously improve the quality of education provided to our students.

Today, the English Language Institute held a productive discussion on a Writing Error Correction Framework. The framework was prepared and presented by Mr. Emmanuel. During the session, team members shared their views, suggestions and made significant contributions to improve the framework before it was finally adopted for official use at the Institute.

At ELI, we believe in learning from one another and working together as a team. Through collective discussions like this, our staff actively contribute to shaping policies that support effective teaching, learning and continuous improvement across the Institute.

We are pleased to conclude a three-day onboarding training for three of our new instructors at the English Language Institute: Mr. Rogers and Mr. Ambrose from Uganda, and Ms. Fiona from Kenya. Our Curriculum Coordinator; Mr. Zakaria Hassan facilitated the sessions of the first two days while Mr. Khalif Barre who is our M&E and Professional English Pathways Coordinator facilitated the sessions of the third day.

The training was designed to help the new instructors understand the wider context of Somali National University, including its campuses, the mission and vision of ELI, the nature and background of our students and the seating arrangements we use to support effective learning.

The onboarding also covered practical areas such as the use of learning platforms, code activation for the Speak Your Mind book series and peer observations, where the new instructors had the opportunity to observe experienced colleagues in the classroom. At ELI, we believe that proper orientation is an important step in helping instructors settle in, understand our expectations and contribute meaningfully to the learning experience of our students.

Our Director; Deka Moahmed chaired the weekly team meeting today at Km4 Campus. During the meeting, she welcomed Dr. Chester Shaba from South Africa to the institute and formally introduced him to the team. We are delighted to have him join our growing community of international and local instructors committed to strengthening English language education.

The meeting focused on key academic activities currently underway at the institute. Discussions covered unit coverage across classes and the conducting of the Reading Circle activity, both of which play an important role in supporting students’ language development and maintaining alignment across campuses.

During the meeting, Mr. Khalif shared the latest track record of students’ Digi-Book activities, providing the team with an overview of current engagement levels. Several instructors shared the strategies they use to support their students in completing the online activities.

The sessions of Day 2 of our three-day training covered the Writing, Speaking and Language and Life sections of the ‘Speak Your Mind’ book. The training focused on effective teaching strategies and learner-centered approaches with practical guidance on classroom application and student engagement. The sessions were interactive and informative strengthening instructors’ confidence and enhancing their ability to deliver these sections with clarity and impact.
