The Bardheere bridge, one of the three main bridges connecting Gedo region with the rest of Somalia, collapsed completely today afternoon due to the flood damage. This will worsen the food security situation of Gedo region, which is already facing a humanitarian crisis. The Buurdhuubo bridge is also submerged under the flood water and at risk of collapsing. The only bridge that seems to be safe for now is the Luuq bridge, but the flood threat is still high and could cause more damage. The authorities and aid agencies are urged to take immediate action to prevent more losses and suffering for the people of Gedo.

Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are facing the most prolonged drought and famine in recent history impacting both human & animal populations, food production and the wider ecosystem.


To respond to threats at the human-animal-environment interface, WHO EMRO, WHO African Region , UKHSA and PANDORA, are conducting a simulation exercise to:

🔵Enhance preparedness for threats
🔵Develop/revise outbreak response plans
🔵Identify gaps in emergency response


The simulation is a cross-border exercise which will engage national experts from Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya and other key stakeholders including community representatives to ensure whole of society engagement and preparedness
