🐝 BEEKEEPING IN BAKOOL: A HIDDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR RESILIENT LIVELIHOODS 🇸🇴

Across Bakool Region, beekeeping offers an important opportunity to diversify incomes for pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, rural households, women and youth.

🌿 Why beekeeping matters

Honey production can provide cash income while requiring far less land and water than livestock. It can complement pastoralism and agriculture, particularly during drought and periods of livestock losses.

💰 Economic potential
• Household income from honey and beeswax
• Employment for youth and women
• Local honey processing, packaging and trading
• Opportunities for cooperatives and small enterprises
• Market linkages from Bakool to Baidoa and Mogadishu

📍 District-level opportunity

Beekeeping can be promoted across Xudur, Wajid, Rab Dhuure, El Barde, Tiyeglow and Yeed, with interventions adapted to local forage, security, market access and community capacity.

🌱 Beekeeping + ecosystem restoration

Bakool's natural vegetation and rangelands provide important bee forage. Protecting and restoring acacia and other indigenous flowering trees and shrubs can simultaneously support:

🐝 Bee colonies
🌳 Biodiversity
🌾 Agroforestry
🐐 Pastoral livelihoods
🌍 Climate resilience

⚠️ Key challenges

• Drought and declining bee forage
• Limited modern beekeeping knowledge
• High cost of hives and protective equipment
• Weak processing and quality control
• Limited access to finance
• Poor market infrastructure and linkages
• Insecurity and restricted mobility

🚀 The opportunity

A Bakool Beekeeping & Honey Value Chain Initiative could establish community apiaries, train beekeepers, promote bee-forage restoration, strengthen cooperatives, introduce hygienic honey processing and connect producers with national markets.

Beekeeping is more than honey—it is a pathway toward livelihood diversification, ecosystem restoration and climate resilience in Bakool.

🌳 Qurac (Vachellia tortilis) – Boqorka Geedaha Dhulka Oomanaha Soomaaliyeed

Qurac waa mid ka mid ah geedaha dabiiciga ah ee ugu qiimaha badan dhulka oomanaha Soomaaliya, waxaana si weyn loogu yaqaannaa "Boqorka Geedaha." Qarniyo badan ayuu laf-dhabar u ahaa nolosha xoolo-dhaqatada iyo beeraleyda, isagoo bixiya calaf, hoos, alwaax, dawo dhaqameed, shidaal, iyo adeegyo badan oo deegaanka muhiim u ah. Ilaalinta geedkan waxay muhiim u tahay dib-u-soo-nooleynta deegaanka, la qabsiga isbeddelka cimilada, iyo horumarinta nolol waarta.

Maxaa Quraca uga dhigaya geed gaar ah?

🌿 Caleentiisa iyo mirihiisu waxay yihiin calaf nafaqo leh oo geelka, ariga, iyo idaha ay cunaan, gaar ahaan xilliyada abaarta.
🏡 Jiriddiisa iyo laamihiisa adag waxaa laga dhistaa guryo, oodo, iyo xeryaha xoolaha.
🌳 Waxay bixisaa hoos iyo harsi ay dadka iyo xooluhu kaga nastaan kulaylka daran.
🌱 Waxay kobcisaa bacriminta ciidda iyadoo ku kordhisa nitrogen.

🐐 Livestock: The Backbone of Somalia's Economy and Resilience.
=======================================
Livestock production is the cornerstone of Somalia's economy, sustaining millions of pastoral and agro-pastoral households while contributing significantly to national food security, employment, and export earnings.

The images below highlight one of Somalia's greatest assets—healthy camel and goat herds thriving in the country's dryland ecosystems. Goats are highly adapted to arid conditions and provide meat, milk, income, and financial security for rural communities.

Why livestock matters in Somalia:
✅ Supports the livelihoods of millions of people.
✅ Generates substantial foreign exchange through live animal exports to Gulf countries. ✅ Provides nutritious food, including milk and meat.
✅ Creates employment across livestock value chains—from herding and veterinary services to marketing and export.
✅ Acts as a vital asset that helps families withstand drought and economic shocks.

Somalia's livestock are raised through diverse production systems:
🐪 Nomadic pastoralism – seasonal movement in search of pasture and water.
🌾 Agro-pastoralism – integrating livestock with crop production.
🌿 Semi-intensive systems – combining grazing with supplementary feeding.
🏡 Intensive farming – commercial livestock production with improved management.

Strengthening animal health services, sustainable rangeland management, climate resilience, improved breeding, and access to regional and international markets will ensure the livestock sector continues to drive inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in Somalia.

At the Centre for Dryland Development and Resilience Systems (CDDRS), we remain committed to promoting sustainable pastoral systems, resilient rangelands, and livestock value chains that improve livelihoods while protecting Somalia's dryland ecosystems.

🌾 Gadam Sorghum: In Bay Region, Somalia.

Bay Region is Somalia's leading sorghum-producing region and the backbone of the country's agropastoral farming systems. As climate change increases drought frequency and rainfall variability, introducing improved sorghum varieties is essential to strengthening food security and resilient livelihoods.

Gadam is a white-grained, early-maturing (75–90 days), drought-tolerant sorghum variety. Originally from Sudan, it was developed and released by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) in 1994 and introduced to Somalia through seed companies in 2024.

Why Gadam Sorghum
🌱 Early maturity (75–90 days)
🌱 Excellent drought tolerance
🌱 Performs well under low and erratic rainfall
🌱 High-quality white grain with strong market potential
🌱 Well suited to dryland and semi-arid farming systems.

For the agropastoral communities of Bay Region, sorghum is more than a staple food crop it also provides valuable crop residues for livestock feed. Improved varieties like Gadam can contribute to stronger crop production while supporting resilient farming systems.

The Centre for Dryland Development & Resilience Systems (CDDRS) is committed to promoting climate-smart agriculture, resilient seed systems, and sustainable agricultural practices that improve productivity and strengthen food systems across Somalia.

🌱 Resilient seeds today, resilient communities tomorrow.
