How Society See Kindergarten, Kindergarteners, and Kindergarten Teachers

Kindergarten is the foundation of a child’s education. It’s where everything begins — their career, their passion, their dreams, confidence, trust, love, and more importantly, their belief or disbelief in education.
Before I became a kindergarten teacher, I used to think it was a waste of time. I did not have the mindset that kindergarten was the foundation of a child’s academic background — until I became the one putting the first brick 🧱 in that foundation.

Since 2018, I have been a kindergarten teacher, and I’ve experienced firsthand the incredible ability to learn and teach those little minds that society — especially in Africa — often overlooks. Many don’t see these young children as capable of much. But you have to be a kindergarten teacher to be overwhelmed, surprised, and amazed by how talented and creative a 2-year-old child can be. Sometimes, when I share these observations with their parents, they think I’m exaggerating — but believe me, I’m not. I’ve had those experiences.

Unfortunately, based on my experience with some kindergarteners' parents, many bring their children for reasons that reflect a misunderstanding of the true purpose of kindergarten.
They believe kindergarten is only a place where children dance, sing, and play for no reason.

And let’s talk about how they see "kindergarten teachers".
They see us as people who didn’t have the chance to pursue a better career — that we ended up teaching because we had no other choice, no experience, no diploma, or no real competencies. They forget that "teaching is a noble profession".
And just from that mindset, you can understand how they view kindergarten: as nothing more than a waiting room before primary school. Otherwise, how can someone think so little of a teacher and still entrust their child to that same teacher every day?
To be fair, not all parents are like this. I have met parents who understand and deeply value the role of kindergarten and the importance of the teacher. More often than not, these are the children who excel in class, because their parents take kindergarten seriously.
