EBKUST HOSTS EXECUTIVE TRAINING PROGRAM ON MARKET SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

The Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), Makeni Campus, has successfully hosted an Executive Training Program on Market Systems Development (MSD) from 21st24th September 2026.

The programme was organized in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Training Centre (ITC), bringing together participants from across Africa to strengthen their knowledge and practical application of Market Systems Development approaches.

The training provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of market systems and systems thinking, with practical sessions focusing on value chain analysis, stakeholder engagement, political economy analysis, and the design of effective market-based interventions. The program also highlighted the importance of gender, youth, and social inclusion in promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development.

Participants explored strategic approaches to market systems development, including the Adopt–Adapt–Expand–Respond framework, inclusive business models, blended finance, and impact investment.

Discussions also examined the importance of collaboration among government institutions, development partners, private-sector actors, and other stakeholders in strengthening market systems.

Particular emphasis was placed on sustainability, green value chains, climate-resilient business models, monitoring, and results measurement.
Participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge and practical tools acquired to address market constraints and create opportunities for inclusive economic growth within their respective contexts.

A major component of the program was the Action Planning Lab, which provided participants with an opportunity to develop individual and institutional action plans for applying MSD principles in practice. The plans were reviewed and strengthened through feedback and peer learning.

The training ultimately enhanced participants’ capacity in value chain mapping, stakeholder analysis, intervention design, inclusive business development, climate resilience, results measurement, and institutional planning.

Through its partnership with ILO and ITC, EBKUST continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing relevant professional and executive learning opportunities that respond to contemporary development challenges.

The program successfully combined theory, practical application, international perspectives, and local experiences, including lessons from Sierra Leone’s Opportunity Salone Project. Participants concluded the program is better equipped to design, implement, and measure market systems interventions that contribute to inclusive, sustainable, and resilient economic development.

As part of our ongoing six-week internship with the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation (MWRS) at the Bombali District Office, final-year Public Health students from Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST) recently conducted a visibility and assessment study at the district dumpsite located in Masongbo.
The primary objective of this site visit was to evaluate current conditions, assess waste handling practices, and examine the potential environmental health impacts on neighboring communities. Through direct observation and field inspection, our student team identified several key operational challenges and potential vector-borne and environmental risks associated with the site's ongoing management.
Understanding the direct connection between solid waste management and community wellness, the team is currently analyzing these findings to formulate actionable, evidence-based recommendations. The Public Relations Unit of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST) wishes to address and correct a misleading graphic currently circulating on social media regarding our Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Rev. Edwin J.J. Momoh.
The graphic, which bears the logo of Hope FM 93.3, attributes a misquoted statement to the Vice-Chancellor concerning Teachers’ Certificate (TC) and Higher Teachers’ Certificate (HTC) qualifications.

We state unequivocally that this quote distorts his actual remarks and misrepresents his policy position on national teacher training. The Vice-Chancellor's statement
"I wish I had the power to stop the offering of TC and HTCs for our primary school teachers."
His statement was made in direct response to the current challenges facing our primary education system. In an era requiring digital literacy and updated instructional techniques, his address highlighted the urgency of reforming foundational educator training, so primary school teachers are equipped with higher-level degree qualifications.

EBKUST SL remains committed to supporting educators and elevating academic standards across Sierra Leone. The discussion centered on strategic capacity building and upgrading institutional frameworks rather than undermining or disqualifying current teachers. The University Administration of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), led by Vice-Chancellor and Principal Rev. Professor Edwin J. J. Momoh, hosted executive leadership from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Sierra Leone at the Magburaka on September 15, 2026.
The high-level meeting focused on deepening institutional collaboration to enhance quality assurance across student recruitment, instruction, clinical training, assessment, and graduation within the University's nursing program.

Reflecting on EBKUST's ongoing transformation since 2018, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the institution's commitment to strict adherence to professional standard-setting guidelines.

During the engagement, the Nursing and Midwifery Council established key regulatory directives to safeguard academic and clinical standards. The Council mandated that nursing class sizes be strictly capped at 50 students to maintain effective practical supervision, alongside an indexing requirement for Year One students admitted through official interview procedures. Furthermore, the Council announced that future State Board Examinations will take place directly within hospital settings to evaluate clinical competencies, while issuing a strict warning that any nursing lecturer caught inflating or compromising grades will face severe regulatory sanctions.

The meeting concluded with both EBKUST and the Nursing and Midwifery Council pledging sustained dialogue and structural cooperation. Council leadership commended the University Administration for proactively convening the session, noting that the partnership establishes a stronger foundation for operational transparency.

Our Microbiology and Immunology Students have launched a student-led initiative to support themselves as they prepare for their upcoming two-month practical placements.

Recognizing the importance of safety and professional readiness in high-containment and diagnostic environments, the initiative focuses on providing essential laboratory safety gear, including protective gloves and clinical scrubs, to all participating students.

This intervention directly addresses critical barriers to effective practical learning. Equipping students with standardized, high-quality safety gear minimizes biological and chemical exposure risks, ensuring full compliance with international biosafety protocols.

Beyond physical protection, having the necessary uniforms and personal protective equipment (PPE) instills confidence, reinforces professional laboratory discipline, and allows students to focus entirely on honing their diagnostic skills and clinical techniques during their intensive two-month training.

By stepping up to meet these crucial resource needs, the students demonstrate proactive leadership and set a high standard for academic excellence and biosafety awareness across the department.

UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT TAKES FIRM STANCE AGAINST EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
The Administration of the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Rev. Professor Edwin J. J. Momoh has reaffirmed its firm and uncompromising position against examination malpractice and any conduct that undermines the integrity of the University’s academic processes.

The position was strongly emphasized today, 7th September 2026, during a meeting held in the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room in Magburaka, where the Vice-Chancellor and his Management Team discussed the need to protect the credibility and standards of the University’s examinations.

Management stressed that examinations are a fundamental part of the academic journey of every student and must therefore be conducted, marked, and assessed with the highest level of fairness, professionalism, and integrity. The administration affirmed that all examination scripts will be thoroughly vetted to ensure that the marking and assessment process meets the expected academic standards.

The Management further made it clear that any lecturer or staff member found wanting, whether through deliberate misconduct, negligence, or any form of compromise in the marking or assessment process, will be held accountable and dealt with in accordance with the University’s established rules and regulations.

The administration also emphasized that no individual will be protected or exempted from accountability because of their position or status. Where credible evidence of misconduct or professional negligence is established, the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken.

Management recognizes that maintaining academic integrity is a shared responsibility. It, therefore, called on lecturers, examination officers, and all staff involved in the examination process to carry out their duties with honesty, diligence, and professionalism.

The University Administration remains committed to ensuring that EBKUST continues to uphold the confidence of its students, staff, parents, partners, and the wider public by maintaining a credible, fair, and transparent academic system.

As part of a final-year chemistry project at Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), students within the Faculty of Basic Sciences conducted a comprehensive water sample collection and quality analysis across selected locations on campus. To guarantee sample integrity and reliability, the research team adhered strictly to standard collection protocols, taking rigorous precautions to prevent contamination before properly labeling, preserving, and transporting the samples under controlled conditions to the laboratory.

The investigation evaluated both the physical and chemical properties of the campus water supply as well as its overall biological safety. The physicochemical analysis measured critical baseline parameters, including pH, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and dissolved oxygen. In parallel, the biological analysis screened the samples for microbial presence to identify potential biological contamination indicators that could pose health risks to the university community.

Together, the combined physical, chemical, and biological findings provided EBKUST researchers with a clear profile of the campus water quality. This data served as an empirical baseline to evaluate the safety of the water and determine its overall suitability for everyday university use.
