Art Camp returns to the American International School of Freetown! Children aged 4-13 are welcome to join us from August 8 to 19 for an exciting exploration of the arts! The program is open to whole community and one week registrations are also possible.

Earth Day.

All members of the ECC and Kindergarten class reflected on our everyday activities and how the earth can be affected by them. We had very long and meaningful conversations each morning this week as we discussed how and what we can do better in order to save the only home that we have. Our major worry is that most people around the world do not care about how we all harm our planet but we are determined to do our part regardless, because every little effort and action to save the earth counts.

World Book Day was a great success with lots of Pangolins bringing their favorite books. We took turns sharing them and reading as many as we could. We wrote character descriptions for the three vile farmers in Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Math has been a continuation of tens and ones but through the medium of money - dimes and pennies. Grade 1 have also worked on a Happy poster exploring ways we can all make our class a happy and kind place to be.

In Social Studies, 5/6 wrapped up their lesson on Early Sumerians by creating real estate advertisements highlighting the many solutions the Sumerians came up with to solve their problems, and how this led to the creation of city states. 7/8 concluded their lesson on the cultural influences of medieval Japan by writing letters to 'friends' in which they explained the differences between medieval Japanese culture to their own.

In ELA, 5/6 learned about various forms of propaganda (name-calling, glittering generalities, endorsement) and then created their own slogans using these techniques. 7/8 practiced debating using evidence through a mini-debate discussing the effectiveness of same-sex education over coed education.

This week grades 7/8 learned about circumference and area of a circle in Math. They conducted a hands on experiment to learn about the relationship between properties of waves in Science.
Grades 5 and 6 learned about photosynthesis in Science. 5th grade multiplied multi digit numbers by decimals and 6th grade divided fractions by mixed numbers in Math.

A wonderful first week back together in Pangolins Class. Drama and story map writing based on the Jonny Duddle story ‘Giganotosaurus’, subtraction in Math, weaving and pop up springs in Art, AND we welcomed four new friends to our class. We love being back in school!

Our New Look.....

Over the vacation period, AISF had a bit of a face-lift. The main building had some much-needed repairs to the roof and the resurfacing of previously much-patched and repaired walls. Then we had the whole building painted in the colors of Sierra Leone—blue, white, and green—and added some logos and murals to give our school a vivid new look.
