Kabala sits within an ancient geological landscape of the West African Craton, characterized by Archean granites and greenstone belts, surrounded by Wara Wara Mountains formed from ancient, metamorphosed igneous rocks like charnockite, representing deep crustal roots uplifted by later orogenic events (mountain-building). Most of Sierra Leone’s bedrock beneath Kabala and nearby areas is composed of Precambrian basement rocks — mainly crystalline granitic gneisses, migmatites, and metamorphosed volcanic/sedimentary sequences. These rocks are typically highly deformed and metamorphosed, reflecting ancient mountain-building episode. The hilly terrain around Kabala including ranges and inselbergs (steep rocky hills) reflects the hard, resistant metamorphic and igneous rocks underlying the region. These rocks are generally granitoid and metamorphic basement that has been uplifted and exposed by erosion.

THE ROKEL RIVER / MAGBELE BRIDGE

Sierra Leone's largest river, crucial for its ecosystem and economy, flowing from the Guinea Highlands to form the major Sierra Leone River estuary where Freetown sits, known for its vital mangrove forests, rich biodiversity, Bumbuna Falls, and significant impacts from mining, agriculture, and urbanization, posing water quality challenges. It's a lifeline for communities, a trade route (linked to iron ore exports via Pepel), and home to historical sites like Bunce Island, but faces threats from pollution and deforestation, necessitating sustainable management. It flow Rises in the Loma Mountains, flows southwest about 240 miles (390 km), joining Port Loko Creek to form the large Sierra Leone River estuary, which empties into the Atlantic.
Original Rokel River crossing at Magbele was built around 1950s approximately 1956
New Magbele / Rokel River Bridge was constructed in 2018–2022, opened 14 May 2022.
