Freetown, Sierra Leone — President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has officially opened the Second Sierra Leone World Food Prize Youth Institute at the Country Lodge Hotel in Freetown, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the World Food Prize Foundation.

Addressing participants, President Bio emphasized the strong connection between education, agriculture and food security, noting that a hungry child cannot fully benefit from education and that national development requires a population that is adequately fed.

The President highlighted the participation of 16 young Sierra Leoneans selected from across the country, who are presenting innovative ideas aimed at tackling hunger, climate change and poverty.

He described the initiative as an important reflection of the objectives of Free Quality School Education, stressing that education should equip young people not only with certificates but also with the ability to identify challenges and develop solutions.

President Bio encouraged the young innovators to remain committed to their ideas, reminding them that meaningful change often takes time to produce results.

He challenged educators, mentors, development partners and citizens to support young people and contribute to building a more food-secure and prosperous Sierra Leone.

CEEPARD Supports 2,500 Vulnerable Children with Learning Materials in Waterloo

The Center for Empowerment, Education, Peace and Agriculture for Rural Development (CEEPARD) Sierra Leone, in collaboration with its partners, has concluded the sixth edition of its Summer School Livelihood Support Programme, reaching 2,500 vulnerable children and women-led households across communities in the Western Area Rural District.

The 2026 programme concluded on Tuesday, September 22, with a donation and distribution ceremony held at the Bassa Town Field in Waterloo. The event brought together children, parents, teachers, community stakeholders, and development partners.

Under the theme “The 17/7 Principle: An Assurance to Achieve All Round Academic Excellence Through Societal Synergies,” the programme provided free intensive summer classes alongside essential learning materials.

Beneficiaries received school bags, books, pens, pencils, and geometry sets, while selected children who travel long distances to school were also provided with bicycles to support their daily movement.

The programme was implemented across six school centres: GEM School in Mabureh Community, REC School in Bassa Town, Sahid High School, Liverpool Islamic School in Grass Field, Memzo Memorial Community School in New London, and the Islamic Foundation in Masorie.

Speaking at the ceremony, CEEPARD Deputy Executive Director, Ing. Mohamed Osman Mansaray, said the initiative was designed to address some of the challenges preventing vulnerable children from attending or remaining in school.

He disclosed that the organisation supported 1,500 pupils in 2025, increasing the number to 2,500 beneficiaries in 2026.

CEEPARD Executive Director Hamid Ibrahim Sesay reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for vulnerable children and strengthening communities through collective action.

He described the completion of the 2026 programme as another step towards reaching more children and appealed for continued support from donors, development partners, volunteers, and community stakeholders.

The organisation also recognized the contributions of its volunteers, interns, ambassadors, partners, participating schools, and individuals who supported the successful implementation of the programme.

With beneficiaries increasing by 1,000 compared to the previous edition, CEEPARD says it intends to expand the programme further in subsequent years, subject to available resources and continued support.

He expressed appreciation to Dr. Zoe Marks, Oppenheimer Faculty Director of Harvard’s Center for African Studies, and Chidi Blyden, Executive Director of the Center, for facilitating the engagement.

The engagement formed part of President Bio’s broader visit to Harvard University, which also includes discussions on leadership, democratic resilience, governance, and strategic issues affecting Sierra Leone and Africa.

President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has renewed Sierra Leone’s call for reparatory justice over the enduring consequences of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, drawing on the historic Amistad story as a reminder of the struggle for freedom and justice.

President Bio made the remarks on Sunday, 27 September 2026, at the United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts, during an event celebrating the historic connection between Quincy and Sierra Leone.

He highlighted the story of Sengbe Pieh, also known as Joseph Cinqué, and other Mende Africans who resisted enslavement aboard the La Amistad in 1839. Their case eventually reached the United States Supreme Court, where former U.S. President John Quincy Adams represented them, with the Court ruling in their favour in 1841.

President Bio said reparatory justice should involve acknowledging historical truth, honouring those who suffered and addressing the continuing consequences of historical injustice.

He also linked the courage of Sengbe Pieh to Sierra Leone’s resilience through periods of national adversity, stressing the importance of peace, education, justice, strong institutions and respect for human dignity.

During his visit to Adams National Historical Park, President Bio also viewed the historic Mendi Bible, describing it as a lasting connection between Sierra Leone and the United States.

The Director General of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), Yankuba Askia Bio, on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, hosted a delegation from the West African Human Rights Defenders (WAHRD) for discussions on port congestion and its impact on the rights and livelihoods of port users.

WAHRD representative Rachel Walters said the visit was aimed at understanding the congestion situation, discussing human rights protection at the port and exploring possible solutions, rather than accusing anyone of human rights violations.

DG Bio informed the delegation that the Port of Freetown is now decongested, while measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence. He noted that the growing volume of cargo continues to place pressure on existing port infrastructure, with about 8,760 containers reportedly handled monthly.

SLPHA Board Chairman Hon. Manso Dumbuya also urged importers and clearing agents to clear their goods promptly to create space for incoming cargo, noting the contribution of port activity to government revenue and national development.

WAHRD representatives acknowledged the Authority’s ongoing transformation and decongestion efforts, while also recognising measures aimed at protecting the rights of port users.

According to the SLP, the operation is aimed at promoting road safety, ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and reducing risks associated with the improper use of artificial and decorative vehicle lights.

Traffic Police personnel are targeting vehicles fitted with unauthorised lighting devices that could distract other road users or impair drivers’ vision.

The SLP is urging motorists to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with Traffic Police personnel as the enforcement exercise continues.
