One theory about the origin of April Fool's Day is that it is related to the changing of the calendar in the 16th century. Prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the New Year was celebrated on the 1st of April. When the new calendar was introduced, with New Year's Day moved to the 1st of January, some people continued to celebrate the old New Year's Day on the 1st of April and were mocked for it.
