All govt-run drug rehab centres in Sierra Leone have shut down due to lack of funds — halting treatment for thousands battling kush. The closure leaves a deadly gap in the fight against the drug crisis.
Let us watch the video of former Inspector General of Police, Ambrose Sovula, on the events of July 4, 2022, when the Sierra Leone Police reportedly arrested women on multiple occasions for participating in peaceful demonstrations, most notably during the “Black Monday” protests in Freetown.
The protesters were highlighting the high cost of living and expressing frustration over the government’s economic policies.
The 2022 “Black Monday” Protests
Dozens of women were arrested after taking part in the peaceful protest in Freetown. According to reports, many of the women were brutally beaten, detained, and allegedly molested by male police officers. The Sierra Leone Police later stated that 57 protesters had been released without charge but did not disclose the total number of women detained.
Former IG Ambrose Sovula emphasized that citizens who wish to protest should formally notify the Police, who would then provide security for a peaceful demonstration. In contrast, the current IG, William Faiya Sellu, has reportedly refused permission for anti-drug protests.
Inspector General of Police Reportedly Blocks Anti-Drug Protest
The Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, has reportedly declined a request from anti-drug activist Michael Tamba Komba to stage a peaceful protest against the growing use of kush in the country.
According to reports, IG Sellu also allegedly threatened Komba with consequences if he made public the refusal letter issued by the Sierra Leone Police.
This development has raised concerns among civil society organizations, who view it as a setback to the national fight against drug abuse and a violation of citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
In response, the Police Spokesman explained that the protest request was declined because the Police were unsure of the identities of those who intended to participate, adding that Komba would be held responsible for any incident that might occur during the protest.
However, many citizens are now questioning: Who is responsible for providing security during peaceful protests — the organizer or the Police?
