🦠 The presence of microorganisms in archives, both on documents and in the air, is key to protecting heritage and staff health. Therefore, understanding their levels in storage environments is essential.
🔬 Within SAGA, we analyse air and materials using advanced methods to ensure safe environments and better preservation of heritage.
🧫 Two analytical approaches were combined: one based on culturing microorganisms in the laboratory and another on the direct identification of their DNA. Studies were carried out in five historical European archives (Florence, Budapest, Lisbon, Malta, and Madrid).
🧬 Comprehensive microbiological and molecular biological analyses, including sampling, were conducted by the of Molecular Biology SAS.

Krajina zVEDAvosti SAV sa na Pohode 2026 (9.–11. júla, Trenčín) predstavila prvýkrát – a stálo to za to. 19 pracovísk SAV z celého Slovenska ukázalo, že veda nie je vzdialená akademická vec, ale súčasť nášho každodenného rozhodovania.

Archive Security & Resilience: Highlights from Krakow
🏛️ Great insights on archive security from Krakow🇵🇱! Our SAGA Project partners at the Foundation for Landscape Protection (FOK) recently represented the project at the Heritage Security Congress.
🛡️ FOK introduced a tailored methodology for risk assessment and resilience-building in archival institutions. Their key message? True resilience goes beyond infrastructure — it is built on strong professional bonds and European cooperation.
💡 The congress offered vital discussions on protecting cultural heritage, focusing on how archives — as sanctuaries of national identity — navigate risks during armed conflicts.

🌱 Sustainability in archival institutions
As partners of the SAGA Project, we are pleased to share a new sustainability self-assessment tool developed by our project colleagues. It is designed to be practical, user-friendly, and adaptable to different institutional contexts.
The tool helps archival institutions evaluate environmental practices and performance in key areas such as:

♻️ Waste management
Completing the assessment provides a detailed report with results and practical recommendations to help institutions become more sustainable.

Protecting Europe’s History: SAGA Capitalisation Seminar in Florence! 🌍🏛️
How do we shield our cultural memory from climate change, disasters, and invisible threats? The SAGA project partners and archive experts met at the stunning Historical Archives of the European Union (Villa Salviati) to share concrete solutions.
Here is a look at the key moments and pioneering ideas from this inspiring seminar:
🌊 A powerful reminder of our mission: Paola D'Orsi took us back to the tragic 1966 Florence flood, illustrating how international solidarity and innovative restoration shaped modern heritage protection.
📊 Empowering archives: Jeremiah Spillane & Brendan Flaherty (Munster Technological University, TEL & Clean Technology Centre) showcased the upcoming SAGA assessment tool—a practical resource designed to help archives evaluate and boost their sustainability in energy, water, waste, and governance.
🔬 The invisible threat: Domenico Pangallo (Institute of Molecular Biology, Slovak Academy of Sciences) delivered a very interesting presentation on microbial risks, reminding us that some of the greatest dangers to our heritage are unseen.
🏰 Adapting historic buildings: Mateusz Binda (Foundation for Landscape Protection) tackled the real-world challenges of making historically protected archival buildings safer and more resilient.
💡 National perspectives: Inga Bolstad (National Archives of Norway) and Françoise Janin (French National Archives) shared invaluable scaling strategies from their respective countries.
With a successful Steering Committee meeting to wrap it up, the energy in Florence proved that SAGA is paving the way for greener, safer, and more resilient archives! 🤝📈

Dnes to u nás opäť poriadne svietilo a hralo farbami! 🌈🦠

Naši mladí vedátori objavovali, ako pigmenty a fluorescencia fungujú ako signály v mikrosvete 💡 Čo sme dnes skúmali? 👇
🟣 fluorescenciu pod UV svetlom – keď mikroorganizmy doslova zažiaria v tme
🎨 mikrobiálne pigmenty – farebnú reč baktérií
🧪 jednoduchú chromatografiu – pozorovanie, izoláciu a separáciu pigmentov

Všetko sme si samozrejme aj poctivo zdokumentovali a spoločne vyhodnotili výsledky 📸📊

Mikrosvet nám dnes ukázal, že aj to neviditeľné dokáže žiariť tými najkrajšími farbami 🌌❤️

Zajtra to všetko vyvrcholí – naši mladí vedci budú prezentovať svoje objavy! 🎤
