On May 14, 2026, the SAGA Capitalization Seminar took place at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence, Italy. 🏛️🇮🇹
The event focused on disaster preparedness, sharing lessons from the historic 1966 Florence floods alongside current practices from Norway and France. 🌊🗺️
Meanwhile, the SAGA project is reaching a crucial milestone: consolidating all the knowledge generated within our research. This means integrating our partners' building and environmental assessments with the microbiological data conducted within the project by our team at the Institute of Molecular Biology SAS 🇸🇰🔬.
The next step? Putting these combined insights into actionable plans to boost the resilience and sustainability of partner archives. 📜✨

SAGA Impact in Budapest 🇭🇺: Cleaner air for archival collections and staff
Within the SAGA project, indoor air quality was assessed in the Bécsi kapu tér building of the National Archives of Hungary 🇭🇺, with analyses provided by the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IMB SAS) 🇸🇰.
Air samples from the research room, offices, and conservation room showed that the most prevalent microorganisms were Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and Aspergillus 🧫 While generally harmless to healthy individuals, air quality is essential for both staff wellbeing and the long-term preservation of archival materials.
Based on these results, a new locally developed air purification system using electrodynamic plasma technology was introduced ⚙️ The system is quiet, filter-free, and suited for sensitive archival environments. Its performance will be further evaluated across the archive.
Thanks to this system, not only staff and researchers, but also the archival materials can breathe easier 🌍

Presentation at the conference “Building Social Resilience in Civil Protection”
On 12 February 2026, the Foundation for Landscape Protection (FOK) joined the conference “Building Social Resilience in Civil Protection” in Warsaw (LOCALIENCE project) 🌍 FOK presented SAGA project results on hazard analysis developed in collaboration with European archives, focusing on risk assessment methodology and key insights 📊 The event connected European initiatives working on resilience, climate change, and heritage protection 🤝 IMB SAS is glad to contribute to these efforts as a SAGA partner.

A prestigious visit to the Institute of Molecular Biology SAS 🇮🇹🔬
On the occasion of the Italian Research Day in the World (Giornata della Ricerca Italiana nel Mondo) on April 22nd, we were honored by the visit of H.E. Gianclemente De Felice, the Ambassador of Italy in Slovakia, accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Carlo Tidu.
The guests were welcomed to our Department of Microbial Ecology by the head of the research group, Dr. Domenico Pangallo, DrSc. During the visit, the Ambassador expressed great interest in our current research projects and took a moment for an inspiring talk with students from the Italian bilingual high school who were participating in a workshop at our institute at that time.

🧪 Veda v praxi na vlastnej koži!
V stredu 18. 3. 2026 sa naše laboratórium premenilo na miesto plné zvedavosti, objavovania a skutočnej vedeckej práce. Po oslovení z OZ eduB sme pripravili v rámci seminára STEB pútavý deň pre stredoškolských študentov z rôznych bratislavských škôl.
Po úvodnej prednáške sa presunuli priamo do Laboratória environmentálnej a potravinovej mikrobiológie UMB SAV, v.v.i., kde si mohli vyskúšať prácu vedcov na vlastnej koži 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬
🔬 izolovali DNA z bakteriálnych izolátov
🧬 amplifikovali ju pomocou PCR
📊 výsledky si overili agarózovou elektroforézou
Teší nás ich záujem a aktívny prístup k práci v laboratóriu. Veríme, že im táto skúsenosť priblížila prácu v oblasti molekulárnej biológie.✨
