In Math, students must recognise visual patterns, identify the rule, and continue it logically — not guess the next shape. Strong pattern recognition builds reasoning skills that apply across many problem types.

Can your child spot the rule confidently?

Idiomatic phrases like “second nature,” “on edge,” and “part and parcel” make writing more vivid and expressive. When students understand their meanings clearly, they can use them confidently and accurately in exams.

Stronger expression. Clearer impact.

When making suggestions with “let’s”, the correct question tag is always “shall we?” — not “should we?”

This small grammar rule helps students write more accurately and avoid common exam mistakes. Clear structure leads to clearer communication.

Does your child sometimes guess the next answer in a pattern question without really checking the rule?

Just one word can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

Words like apparently, perhaps, and possibly show different levels of certainty. Teaching students to notice these subtle differences strengthens comprehension and makes writing more precise.

Clear thinking leads to clearer expression.

Do words like all, some, and much change the verb we use? Not when the noun is uncountable.

Students often match the verb to the quantifier instead of the noun. Remember: the verb agrees with the uncountable noun, which takes a singular verb.

Small grammar detail. Big impact on accuracy.

From April onwards, JLY will start to diversify into Mathematics for students ages 6 to 13 or Primary 1 to 6 (Singapore). Do look out for our FB and IG Reels in this new series called 'Math That Scores'. You can also download a sample of our mini-PDFs on our website: jlyeducation.com.

In the future, these mini-PDFs will be on sale and packed with teaching treats for parents to guide their children in Math and exercises for students to practice beyond what is taught in schools. In the meantime, we hope you like our new Math That Scores series!

Many children can continue a simple pattern, but they often do so by guessing instead of checking the rule carefully.

In this Math That Scores post, we show children how to slow down, spot what changes each time, and solve the pattern step by step. A small shift in thinking like this can make a big difference in confidence and accuracy.

A strong vocabulary word is not just one you can recognise — it is one you can use in different ways.

Take the word combat. Many students know it can mean fighting in battle, but it can also mean trying to stop something harmful, such as crime, disease, or bullying. Learning these extended uses helps students understand texts better and use words more effectively in writing.

When learning vocabulary, it always helps to ask:
Can this word be used in another way?

Here’s another useful way to show reason more precisely in sentences.

Many students already know phrases like because of and due to, but owing to is another strong option that can make writing more varied and accurate. The key is to use it correctly — it should be followed by a noun or noun phrase.

Small grammar points like this can make a real difference in cloze passages, editing, synthesis and transformation, and writing.
