Should we encourage the use of “Pay-As-You-Use” model instead of Prepaid services packages?
Why a “Pay-As-You-Use” Model Benefits Consumers?
Prepaid packages have increasingly become tools for hard-selling. Once consumers pay upfront, they often feel obligated to return for their sessions, providing repeated opportunities for upselling or manipulative sales tactics. These packages also act as interest-free loans to the company. When cancellation penalties apply, consumers are unfairly penalized for wanting to stop a service they no longer wish to continue.
A “pay-as-you-use” model, by contrast, empowers consumers and protects their interests:
1. Reduces Financial Risk – Consumers only pay for what they use, avoiding cancellation fees or losses if a business suddenly closes.
2. Prevents Manipulative Sales – Without prepaid commitments, businesses are incentivized to focus on quality service rather than coercive upselling.
3. Full Control Over Spending – Customers decide when, how often, and how much they spend, aligning payment with personal budgets.
4. Greater Flexibility – Services can be used as needed, making it easier for consumers with unpredictable schedules or changing priorities.
5. Encourages Trial and Adoption – New customers can try services without the fear of being locked into long-term payments.
6. Builds Trust – Transparent, usage-based payment reduces anxiety and fosters a positive consumer experience.
7. Promotes Responsible Consumption – Consumers become more mindful of usage, reducing unnecessary or wasteful spending.
8. Supports Long-Term Loyalty – Flexible usage options allow consumers to scale services up or down without penalties, encouraging repeat engagement.
9. Reduces Legal and Regulatory Risks – Fewer complaints arise related to unfair contracts or cancellation disputes.
10. Transparency and Accountability – Customers clearly understand what they are paying for, improving confidence and satisfaction.
11. No More Attitude Change After You Say “No” – With prepaid packages, some consultants suddenly turn cold or unfriendly (“blackface”) when you refuse to buy more. After that, your remaining sessions may feel uncomfortable or poorly done. A pay-as-you-use model removes this pressure completely.
In short, a pay-as-you-use model shifts the balance of power back to consumers, ensuring fairness, transparency, and trust while encouraging businesses to deliver genuine value.
