From poachers to protectors: In the ‘Guilin of Thailand’, locals lead efforts to conserve ancient rainforest 04/03/2023

This is article is worth your time. It shares many insights into how development levies certain costs on people and the environment, and offers different perspectives on how climate change can be countered in ways other than scientific or political.

One interesting angle is how responsible eco-tourism is a catalyst for bringing incidents of encroachment, destruction of resources and poaching of wildlife to zero throughout Khao Sok National Park, a protected forest area in southern Thailand.

“When former poachers saw that there were a lot of tourists coming, they switched from wildlife hunting to become tour guides and boat operators. They also opened restaurants or shops. This means they can earn a direct income and it isn’t illegal,” said Terdthai Kwanthong, the chief of Khao Sok National Park.

The accords, named after the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Artemis moon programme, are a set of non-binding commitments based on the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

Aimed at promoting a peaceful, sustainable and beneficial use of space for all humankind, they lay out key principles about activities relating to space exploration, science and commerce.

For example, all activities under the accords should be exclusively for peaceful purposes and signatories commit to transparency in the dissemination of information regarding their space policies and plans.

Other principles include committing to open sharing of scientific data and plan for the mitigation of orbital debris, as well as preserving the heritage of outer space.

The ‘Doomsday’ Vault Where the World’s Seeds Are Kept Safe 13/03/2022

The Svalbard Global Seed Bank in Norway contains 1.1 million seed samples from roughly 6000 plant species. There are as many as 1,700 versions of the vault, called gene banks, all over the world. This global network collects, preserves and shares seeds to further agricultural research and develop new varieties. The Svalbard vault was opened in 2008, effectively as a backup storage unit for all those hundreds of thousands of varieties.

"Over the past 50 years, agricultural practices have changed dramatically, with technological advances allowing large-scale crop production. But while crop yields have increased, biodiversity has decreased to the point that now only about 30 crops provide 95% of human food-energy needs. Only 10% of the rice varieties that China used in the 1950s are still used today, for example. The U.S. has lost over 90% of its fruit and vegetable varieties since the 1900s. This monoculture nature of agriculture leaves food supplies more susceptible to threats such as diseases and drought."
