šŸŽ¶ The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is pleased to share the revised definition of Music Therapy, developed through the work of the Working Group for Reviewing and Revising the Definition of Music Therapy during the 2023–2026 Council term.

This important milestone was announced during the General Business Meeting of the WFMT at the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy - Connecting Borders in Bologna, Italy (July 2026), marking a significant step in representing the evolution of our profession worldwide.

šŸŒ To make this definition increasingly accessible to the global music therapy community, new translations will be available over the coming week.

If you would like to contribute by providing a translation in your language, please send your proposal to: [email protected]

Together, we can support the dissemination and accessibility of music therapy knowledge across cultures and communities. šŸ’™

Joel just turned 6, and I’ve been teaching him piano for a while now. We don’t have a fixed lesson schedule. Sometimes it’s 5 minutes after his shower, 10 minutes before bedtime, or 20 minutes before school. We simply make the most of the little pockets of time we have.

Joel finds it challenging to stay focused and can be quite hard on himself when he makes mistakes. He’s always full of wiggles, so a traditional 30-minute piano lesson just isn’t the right fit for him.

Now, he’s able to learn six new songs within 30 minutes with me and even complete 20 pages of his theory book in one sitting. Seeing how much he’s grown in his focus, confidence, and perseverance has been so rewarding.

More than what he accomplished, my favourite part was seeing the huge smile on his face at the end. Watching his confidence grow, one small step at a time, is the greatest reward. ā¤ļø

Eta, I will always remember you as a great friend, music therapist, clinician, lecturer, mentor, wife, sister and daughter… thank you for showing us unconditional love with your heart and music. Till we meet again!

The LASALLE community is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Eta Lauw, who was not just a colleague and educator in the MA Music Therapy programme, but also a beloved mentor, cherished friend and dedicated music therapist serving and uplifting the community.

Our hearts are with her family, friends and students.

Eta’s life, work and impact is remembered in this Lianhe Zaobao article: https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/singapore/story20260716-9374756.

I honestly never expected 60 music therapists from around the world to join my 90-minute workshop at the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy.

Together, we sang and signed The Rainbow Song in Singapore Sign Language (SgSL)—a small glimpse into how music, movement, and visual communication can create more inclusive spaces for children of diverse abilities.

My workshop, Inclusive Choir Strategies: Music Therapy Approaches for Children Ages 3–8, shared practical ideas for planning inclusive music experiences using the Bell-Curve Energy Model (Chow, 2022)—considering children’s sensory and emotional needs throughout a session.

We explored how a multisensory approach—using visual supports, tactile props, movement, imagination, and music—can support participation, engagement, and a sense of belonging for children of all abilities.

It was an honour to share this work on the world stage while also bringing a little piece of Singapore to the international music therapy community.

Thank you to everyone who sang, signed, participated so wholeheartedly, and made the session so memorable. I’m deeply grateful for the conversations, encouragement, and connections we shared. ā¤ļø
