Mr Kalai from the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) came down to our school to give an enriching talk to the Estate Staff and members of The Wild Side on common wildlife encounters in urban areas in Singapore, sharing with us inspirational wildlife rescue stories and the proper ways to help rescue our lovely resident RGS wildlife when they are in need :) Thank you so much ACRES!

Yesterday was World Snake Day! :) This is a beautiful adult Oriental Whip Snake and such snakes are really common in nature areas in Singapore such as MacRitchie :)

To commemorate World Snake Day, The Wild Side would like to encourage everyone to try and see snakes in a different light. They may appear creepy moving around without legs and they may appear sinister in movies like 'Snakes on a Plane', but in reality snake are actually really super shy and super sweet beings (I've experienced this first hand myself!), and they will never hurt a person unless provoked! People tend to assume automatically that snakes are dangerous and venemous, fear overruns reason and as a result, many harmless snakes have lost their lives just like that.

Please call Animal Concerns Research and Education Society's Wildlife Rescue at 97837782 the next time you see snakes in urban areas instead of harming the snake! :) let's try for awe and appreciation over fear and disgust :) -kel

In lieu of Asian Koel Day, here's an article by ACRES on what to do when you find an injured Asian Koel!:)

Aves the young Asian Koel was spotted by our caller at the area around the playground, having dropped out of the nest. Aves was mistaken as a young Crow and understandably so, as the adult Crows were defensive and swooping down (did not peck, just flying above head) at people who were near Aves.

Our Wildlife Rescue Officers tried to reunite Aves with the crows however, the crows must have realised that Aves is not one of their own and did not bother with Aves. It was interesting to note that even so, the crows were absolutely protective of the youngs they take care of, including young koels.

The Asian Koels are brood parasites where they will lay their eggs secretly/tactically in other bird's nests, most commonly in crow's nest but even recorded in other small bird's nest.

In such cases when adults are present and defensive(e.g. crows, orioles, bird of prey), please do not approach the young bird but observe where the young bird is and call our ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline at 97837782 and let our Wildlife Rescue Officers deal with the young bird.

Aves is currently with Jurong Bird Park undergoing rehabilitation.

8th March MacRitchie Awareness Walk 10/03/2014

On 8th March, The Wild Side and Cogitare, together with about another 30 interested RGS students, set off for a MacRitchie Forest Walk with Love Our MacRitchie Forest. We all had a great and meaningful time not just appreciating MacRitchie's beauty, but also reflecting on how we can each make a a positive difference for MacRitchie! We caught a glimpse of the pink-necked green pigeon up in the treetops, and we were fascinated by the huge and beautiful golden orb weaver spider and so much more amazing wildlife! :) Photos by Kelsie :) Our Macritchie Forest
