Last evening’s Advanced Class brought us back to something seemingly simple — yet deeply fundamental to Aikido:

Tai no Henko.

We practise it countless times. We turn, we blend, we connect.

But beyond the movement lies an important lesson: how do we receive force without fighting it, and how do we move together without losing our own centre?

For Nage, Tai no Henko teaches us to feel the direction of Uke’s energy, move off the line, maintain connection and lead that energy rather than attempting to overpower it. When the body, hips and centre move as one, strength becomes increasingly unnecessary.

For Uke, the practice is equally important. Uke is not simply a passive partner waiting to be moved. Through Tai no Henko, we learn to give a sincere attack, maintain connection, feel changes in direction and continuously adjust our balance and body.

Good Nage develops good Uke. Good Uke develops good Nage.

And somewhere between the two, we begin to understand that Aikido is not merely about doing techniques to someone — it is about learning to move, feel and communicate through connection.

A wonderful evening of exploration, correction, laughter and discovery — because even the movements we have practised hundreds of times can continue revealing something new when we approach them with a beginner’s mind.

Having good Aikido technical skills is great, but attainable.
However, to be good teacher requires, compassion, understanding, love..

These qualities cannot be earned through years alone; they are cultivated through purpose, clear direction, and an open heart to serve.
