welenia studios is 14 today! Thankful for another year of good saves, funny & humbling surprises, meaningful stories, and leaky stationery. God plays a long game of Love; He moves with precision, and He delights in every detail of our lives.
Thank you for reflecting His steadfastness to me, through the ways you show up and stay on. For your freely-given blessings of healing companionship, unwavering support, truthful encouragement, wise counsel, timely correction, bold challenge, practical nourishment, and affectionate hospitality.
Thank you for sharing your journeys with me as well - as partners, teammates, fellow creatives, friends, mentors, neighbours, and family. Your generosity has allowed me to mature in the joyful disciplines of listening deeply, observing empathetically, and waiting confidently.
“The work of my hands belongs to You and that it is fitting to return this gift to You.” Pray to keep my pen in the write hand, my heart in the right place. Right & ready. Wise and willing. With an unhurried and discerning spirit. #快手笔

Celebrating 5,000 days of this work of witness, encouragement, honesty, congruence and playfulness ❤ Thank you all very much for journeying with me! It has been a colourful, God-graced trail paved with the blessings of your presence, friendship, support, humour, counsel, challenge, inspiration, prayers and partnership 😊 You have helped me to keep my pen in the write hand, heart in the right place. Ready for more mysteries, meaning - and marker stains! #快手笔
“Jesus Himself must draw men to Himself; and Jesus is quite equal to the work in every case. Be not tempted by the quackeries of the day; but as workers for the LORD work in His own way, and draw with the LORD's own cords. Draw to Christ, and draw by Christ, for then Christ will draw by you.” – C H Spurgeon
“Humanness depends on being faithfully heard. And being faithfully heard depends on risky speech of self-disclosure uttered in freedom before a faithful listener.” - Walter Brueggemann (Interrupting Silence: God's Command to Speak Out)
“Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable;” - David Augsburger (Caring Enough to Hear and Be Heard)

welenia studios is 13 today! Thankful for another year of writing the love of God, scribing on paper and hopefully also on hearts. Another year of loving this unlikely work I’m given to do - which is also a work of love being done in me.
The love of God: seen, heard and felt in conversations I’ve witnessed and communities I’ve accompanied, across sectors. Not just in faith-based work, because redemptive action and choices for right relatedness (can) happen everywhere.
The love of God: received through all your support and friendship, counsel and humour, correction and encouragement, challenge and acceptance. Through what He has allowed and given - mistakes and miracles. And from judgment calls, sudden inspiration, and sheer hard practice.
The love of God: which endlessly refills the marker of my soul. He enables me to be a reservoir (giving out of a fullness He takes care of) vs. a canal (pouring out as fast as I take in). This is grace.
Thank you for gracing the studios’ 13th year as partners, teammates, fellow creatives, friends, encouragers, advisors, mentors, neighbours and witnesses to a story of drawing ever nearer to Love, in faith, with hope. Thank you for sharing your stories and moments with me, and for telling stories and creating moments with me.
Today I celebrate being 13 by (i) baking Communion bread for a spiritual retreat for young adults, tomorrow, (ii) getting ready for story-telling and story-listening class later, (iii) preparing to share about visual scribing in a Faith x Arts session next week, (iv) having dinner with a spiritual friend and mentor I respect and cherish. It is a with wonderful vocational vibes. Thank you, God! To write your Love, would really drain the ocean dry.

"If we look deeper, this is not a case of contrast, it is not that there are sharply opposed to each other these two things, the gentleness and the greatness, and condescension and the magnificence, but that the former is the direct result of the latter; and it is just because He is Lord, and has dominion over all, that, therefore, He bears the burdens of all. For the responsibilities of the Creator are in proportion to His greatness, and He that has made man has thereby made it necessary that He should, if they will let Him, be their Burden-bearer and their Servant. The highest must be the lowest, and just because God is high over all, blessed forever, therefore is He the Supporter and Sustainer of all. So we may learn the true meaning of elevation of all sorts, and from the example of the loftiest, may draw the lesson for our more insignificant varieties of height." - Alexander Maclaren (The Burden Bearing God. "Expositions of Holy Scripture: Psalms", 281-284)

welenia studios is 12 today! 3 full leaps. Thank you all very much for gracing the past 12 years with your dependable presence and timely help, wise counsel and delightful humour, warm encouragement and firm challenge, faithful friendship and generous love. Thank you for journeying with me - and this unlikely little practice - as partners, teammates, fellow creatives, friends, mentors, neighbours and family. Thank you for sharing your stories and moments with me, and for telling stories and creating moments with me. In your own ways, you have helped me keep my pen in the write hand, my heart in the right place.
Looking forward to more stories, scribing and sketches written on minds, hearts and lives in a new leap cycle 🙏❤️

Happy to support the SGUNHiLUGP this week, which was helmed by a great team🙂 First time reading up on 16 Latin American cities! Besides learning about technical challenges and development opportunities, I also took time to explore their histories and cultures. Read and listened to some of their poets and writers, musicians, artists - and chefs! Savour the rich flavours and vibrant colours of these lands😄

- Octavio Paz (Mexican poet and diplomat; 𝘗𝘪𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘭 ("Sunstone"), Stanza 21)
[A description of how we as humans see each other. ... But Paz gives us a glimpse of hope in the last two lines. ... telling us that perhaps those same eyes that we use that may bring us a spiritual death can be the way back to life. It is one’s discovery of self first is the key to seeing what is truth in this world. If we see one another as a bringer of joy, a bringer of peace, and live for one another, that is true life.]
"Without them it wouldn’t be what it is:
the open mouth of a wolf,
the apathetic look of an eye socket.
Light combusts,
cooking laughter and meals.
Shadow hides, in the closets, dresses
that, like handkerchiefs,
have been wiping off tears and fears for centuries.
Both light and shadow battle for life.
Amidst the combat, children fall into their arms
who are crying for the first time
and parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents,
dogs, cats, and various birds are all devoured.
The house, never still, creaks and shakes,
and with its walls like sails
moves through time.
We, inside the house, are just dust
that some wind blows along now and then,
and disappears."

welenia studios is 11 today! Thank you all very much for your support and belief, presence and practical help, counsel and humour, encouragement and challenge, friendship and love❤️ Thank you for sharing your stories and moments with me, and for telling stories and creating moments with me. Am grateful that I still love this work I’m given to do - which is also a work being done in me. The habits of showing up, paying attention, being curious, listening with love, mirroring with honesty, acknowledging without fear, trusting the process, waiting for emergence, having a loose grasp, and embracing negative spaces etc, are joyful disciplines for professional finesse and personal formation. It’s a great blessing to live undividedly, firmer and fuller in the direction and depths of congruence🙏
“At the heart of gratitude is the acknowledgment that even that which we do is a gift. … I’ve had a wonderful life. I’ve been given good work to do, and I’ve been given good friends to be with me in that work. … How wonderful it is to have a life that makes possible a glimpse of the truth. It humbles me.”” - Stanley Hauerwas (Eleventh Anniversary Letter: Humility (and Humour). The Character of Virtue: Letters To A Godson, 150, 155-156)

Celebrating 10 years of TFLUGP* with the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) & Temasek Foundation; grateful to be part of this journey/story over time🙏🙂 There are heartfelt moments in every cohort. This time, a few participants came up to chat and share about their children who love drawing and/or are artists-in-the-making. One lady described her teenage daughter's artistic flair; and how her daughter is thinking of giving up on her art in favour of more "practical" livelihood options. She told her daughter firmly and lovingly, "You have so much more art(istic) talent than you know, I can see it. Do not let it go."😍 How's that for parental support?😍 Even as we seek to govern cities, provinces and states well, we must (first) check our own households and nourish all with love and encouragement ... For each cohort, I also relish the opportunity to pray specifically for the cities and communities represented, through the urban challenges they bring to class for learning and peer support 🙏❤️ "Seek the welfare of the city"

Since I began professional visual practice a decade ago, the NTUC has been an encouraging part of the studios' story: as a membership body and resource (I initially took up membership in the Educational Services Union, then switched to NTUC U FSE (freelancers and self-employed persons) when that was set up); as a client (our first project was the Labour Movement Our SG Conversations in 2013); and now also as sandbox co-experimenters.
Our latest play-learn comes under UFSE's Be Your Own Breakthrough (BYOB) series. We will be offering a short, simple and shoestring craft activity for self-examining personal/work habits. It's also the first time that UFSE is bringing the BYOB back onsite! 🙂 We'll take time and create space to explore:
• Good trees bear good fruit, but bad trees bear bad fruit. What habits can we cultivate to help us flourish like good trees?
• What ways of thinking, feeling, choosing and relating are we rooted in - and what kind of fruit do they bear?
• What might we need to prune from our everyday work and personal lives, in order to bear good fruit?
If you're a freelancer/self-employed person, do consider joining us that Monday to pause, play and ponder🙂 If you're not, feel free to share and invite your friends who are FSE to this session 🙂

10 years old 🙏❤️ Thank you for being here and staying on as partners, teammates, fellow creatives, friends, encouragers, advisors, mentors, neighbours and first-hand witnesses to a story of drawing ever nearer to Love in faith with hope. For gracing the past year with your presence, love, support, generosity, counsel, and encouragement 😊 Still a day-by-day “long obedience in the same direction”, labour of love, space for leaky markers, and zone for long Zooms. Carry on with a loose grasp 🙏💖
Aslan,” said Lucy “youʼre bigger”.
“That is because you are older, little one” answered he.
“Not because you are?”
“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”
- C.S. Lewis (Prince Caspian)
“Our task is not to somehow inject God into our work but to join God in the work he is already doing in and through our vocational lives." ― Tish Harrison Warren (Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life)
"He leads us step by step, from event to event. Only afterward, as we look back over the way we have come and reconsider certain important moments in our lives in the light of all that has followed them, or when we survey the whole progress of our lives, do we experience the feeling of having been led without knowing it, the feeling that God has mysteriously guided us.” - Paul Tournier (Reflections: A Personal Guide for Life’s Most Crucial Questions)
"The meanings that God calls us to in our lives are never abstract. Though the call may ask us to redefine, or refine what we know as life, it does not demand a renunciation of life in favor of something beyond it. Moreover, the call itself is always composed of life. That is, it is not some hitherto unknown voice to which we respond; it is life calling to life." ― Christian Wiman (My Bright Abyss: Meditations fo a Modern Believer)
