Pay-it-forward campaign
Children from Lakeside Family Services Before and After School Care wrote well-wishes and words of encouragement for other children at National University Hospital (NUH)'s paediatric ward, Singapore Children's Society (SCS) and Club Rainbow as part of a pay-it-forward campaign powered by the People's Association and four final-year students from Nanyang Technological University's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication.

The pay-it-forward campaign, called Project Guiding Hands, aims to promote volunteerism among the young and create a chain of giving, and supports the empowerment of recipients to becoming givers.

Hey guys! We're back again with our Volunteer Feature! :) As our campaign draws to an end, we would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all our student volunteers!

[WESTWOOD SECONDARY SCHOOL]

Our excursion to the Singapore Sports School last Friday was organised by this group of bubbly Sec 3 students from Westwood Secondary School. They are Sports CCA leaders from various CCAs such as hockey, netball and basketball.

Given their interests in sports, the students came together as a committee to organise a mini sports-day event for 40 children from Lakeside Family Services. They also met regularly in school to plan and test out the game stations in preparation for the actual event. They were able to apply the skills gained from their CCA to organise an event on a community level.

Some of them took on roles as station masters, explaining game rules and ensuring safety among the children participants. Others joined the children as group facilitators, cheering them on and worked together in teams to score points. Their enthusiasm was so infectious and the children loved the programme!

We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for the awesome event and effort in making our event a huge success. You guys did a great job in engaging every single child and made sure no one was left out.

We hope our campaign motivated you guys to continue volunteering! It is our vision to make use of fun volunteer activities as a way to promote better attitudes towards youth volunteerism. Our community definitely needs energetic young volunteers like you to make a difference!

It's never too early to teach children to appreciate and make Traditional local snacks! Do check out My Ah Ma Make One, another WKWSCI initiative to promote and preserve local traditional snacks! :) Do give them a thumbs up too!

[Volunteer Feature] - Lakeside Family Services Alumni

Meet Shereen (19) Joey (20) and Shawn (21) (left to right) They were once children enrolled in Lakeside FSC Before and After School Care Programme.

Shawn has graduated 9 years ago and regularly returns as a volunteer during his school holidays. Both Shawn and Joey are now pursuing degrees at National University of Singapore while Shereen is waiting for her university admission They remained as close friends and visits the centre together whenever they have the time.

So, what prompted them to return as volunteers?

Shawn said, “Because we grew up here, we thought it would be nice to come back and let the existing kids experience what we went through in the past. We helped the teachers run activities, carnivals and camps similar to ones we had last time.”

Joey also added that while she was at Lakeside BASC, children who graduated more than 10 years ago returned as volunteers. Now, they are continuing this tradition and are hoping to encourage existing children to do the same in future.

Their account is an example of Paying It Forward, also known as Serial Reciprocity. Serial reciprocity usually occurs over time, relying mostly on future action rather than at present. By engaging the current batch of children in little acts of paying it forward, our team hopes that in future, they will eventually become volunteers themselves, just like Shereen, Joey and Shawn! :)
