River Valley High School, Singapore (Official) Welcome to the official page for River Valley High School! These give RVHS its present status as an S.I.A.

Founded in 1956, River Valley High School (RVHS) is a forward-looking premier educational institution steeped in history and eastern culture. Since it was founded more than 60 years ago, RVHS has nurtured many generations of Singaporeans and has garnered many awards and accolades. In 1979, owing to her strong Chinese roots, RVHS was designated as a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) School. In 1994, RVHS was selected to be in the pioneer batch of six schools to be granted the Autonomous Status (AS). In 2006, RVHS was again given the green light to run the Integrated Programme (IP) by the Ministry of Education. school, where S stands for SAP, I stands for IP and A stands for AS. RVHS moved into its latest 7.64-hectare campus at Boon Lay Avenue in December 2009.

Our student athletes give back to the community 🙌
55 athletes from our Sports Council and sports CCAs volunteered at the Nanyang By Foot event yesterday. This annual collaboration between our Sports Council and Nanyang Community Sports Network saw our students connect meaningfully with Nanyang residents in celebration of National Day! 🎉

Shavonne Sim (26J20) created this stamp design, incorporating elements from the Nanyang neighbourhood, and it was used for a colouring activity at the event.

We’re still buzzing from last week’s Humanities & Literature Week — here’s a recap of our Humanities & Literature Week!

From thought-provoking talks by Ms Wang Shimeng from the National Heritage Board and archaeologist Mr Michael Ng, to learning journeys at Changi Chapel & Museum and the Former Ford Factory, our History and Geography students dove deep into the past and emerged with a richer understanding of who we are. The excitement didn’t stop there as our game booths “SG Jeopardy”, “Spin the Globe”, and “Human or AI” had everyone thinking on their feet, while our Escape Room challenged students to think critically and work together under pressure.

Our students also got to explore literature beyond the classroom as they visited the Singapore Odyssea exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore and our Lit & Film Society students screened their original works. At our Open Mic session, brave voices enthralled us with their original poems and stories while ELDDS brought stories to life through their skits. With new additions such as interactive debates and JC debates where our teacher debaters, Ms Li Chen and Mr Mark Cordiner, sparred with wit and conviction, the energy was simply unmatched. Our Book Character Day was one for the books as students and teachers transformed into literary characters, celebrating the joy of reading through creativity and imagination.

The Humanities and Literature Week speaks to the enduring value of humanities, where stories inspire curiosity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world.

With National Day just around the corner, students from 26J15 and the Art Club spent the weekend spreading the Singapore spirit at Taman Jurong’s National Day Carnival. From storytelling sessions and puppet making to traditional games, our students kept the young ones engaged. The Art Club added a colourful touch with a crafts booth and painting of 3D cardboard models. What a wonderful way to give back to the community and celebrate what it means to be a Singaporean!

Six students and two teachers represented RVHS at the Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Innovation Camp & “Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow” Invitational Tournament (SIYSTIC).

Our three project teams showcased their innovation projects, which were winning entries from competitions in Singapore, at the Youth Sci-Tech Innovation Achievements Exhibition and Roadshow:
🔹 4D Connect — Liaw Shan Ting (3D) & Isabel Fong Yurou (3G)
🔹 VersaView — Luo Yuecheng (3B), How Jing Lui (3F) & Yeo Jun Zhe Lerwin (3H)
🔹 Smart Wearable 12-Lead Electrocardiogram with IoT Capabilities — Valerie Ong Yue Yu (26J05) and Toh Kai Xuen (26J11) who is now at a six-week Overseas Student Attachment Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, United States.

In addition, three of our students also teamed up with peers from Shanghai Taoliyuan Experimental School to take part in the Invitational Tournament, where they successfully completed the challenge of designing an automated system to sort and direct different balls to three designated destinations.
Our delegates also had the privilege of attending the prestigious World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 🤖, where Valerie was specially selected to present her AI- and IoT-powered innovation, that provides real-time monitoring of electrocardiogram readings for patients with heart disease, before an audience of 700 participants at the WAIC Global Youth Innovation Literacy Cultivation Forum in the AI Era.
Reflecting on her experience, Valerie shared, “WAIC gave me the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers from different countries and cultures, each bringing unique perspectives on STEM and innovation. It showed me that AI is truly a universal language—one that transcends borders and has immense potential to improve lives around the world.”

Our Y.LEAD participants attended panel discussions to learn more about arts, culture and heritage, regional and global affairs, innovation and AI, social compact, and sustainability.  
Here’s who they got to learn from ➡️

🏛️Arts, Culture, and Heritage
From our alumnus Mr Yong Min Ho, a heritage educator, who highlighted the need to make heritage come alive for a whole new generation, to Mr Royston Phang, Adjunct Lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and UX Designer, who showed how art and design can be harnessed as tools for environmental change, and Mr Sarafian Salleh, President of the Bugis Malay Society Singapore, who shared about reviving Bugis traditions, our participants left with a deeper appreciation of how culture and creativity can drive meaningful change.

🌏 Regional & Global Affairs
Associate Professor Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from Nanyang Technological University gave keen insights on Artificial Intelligence and the importance of political affairs within the region, while Mr Keith Yap, Founder and Host of the Front Row Podcast, inspired our participants to play a part in strengthening Singapore’s role as the region’s intellectual hub. Our alumna Ms Christy Tan, Managing Director and Senior Investment Strategist at the Franklin Templeton Institute, also spoke about the impact of shifting global markets.

🤖 Innovation & AI
Mr James CK Kok, Head of Strategic Partnerships at AI Singapore, shared about enabling governments, universities and public institutions to build sustainable AI capability, giving our participants a glimpse into how AI is being shaped at a global scale.

🤝 Social Compact
Our participants walked away with fresh perspectives on health equity and youth empowerment from Mr Piragathesh Subramanian, Deputy Director, HIV Programming, World Health Organisation, while Ms Zoe Tee, Deputy Head of Youth Department at Fei Yue Community Services, and Ms Khim Tan, Head of Programmes at Access Singapore, spoke passionately about youth empowerment, and bridging opportunity gaps.

Over 3 days in May, some of our Sec 2 classes stepped into the heart of Penang’s rich culture and history, exploring the iconic Clan Jetties, Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Khoo Kongsi, and Penang History Gallery, and soaking in the vibrant Penang Street Art. They also experienced the morning buzz at the Chow Rasta Market and gained real-world insights at the Yosogo Stationery Factory, Coex Penang, and Penang Tzu Chi Recycling Centre. A highlight of the trip was their visit to Chung Ling High School where our students got to interact with their peers, learn about the school’s programmes, and even participate in a range of engaging CCA activities. Through these experiences, our students reflected on the delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing progress, observed how diverse cultures come together to shape a community’s identity, and drew meaningful parallels between Penang and Singapore. This OELP trip was indeed an enriching one, having deepened our students’ understanding of history, culture, and identity.

Secondary 1 Educators and Connectors Week 🌟
Our Sec 1s had an amazing week learning beyond the classroom! Through immersive cultural activities, students deepened their appreciation for Singapore's rich heritage and discovered what the Singaporean identity means to them. The interdisciplinary learning journeys, such as those on sustainable farming 🌱and urban planning 🏙️, challenged them to draw connections across subjects, sharpening their thinking and broadening their perspectives. From hands-on experiences to meaningful conversations, the activities inspired curiosity, fostered cultural sensitivity, and equipped students with the tools to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
