⚡ Primary science tuition tip: Energy can never be created or destroyed. It can only be converted — and three things about that trip children up.⁠

1️⃣ A hydroelectric dam.⁠
⁠
Potential energy (water held behind the dam) → Kinetic energy (water flowing down) → Kinetic energy (the spinning turbine) → Electrical energy (the generator).⁠
⁠
⚠️ Look at the middle two. They are both kinetic. The form does not change at all — the energy simply transfers from the water to the turbine.⁠
That is the one that catches children out. A pupil who has learned "conversion means the form changes" will not expect two identical boxes in a row, and will invent a form to fill the gap.⁠

2️⃣ A switched-on smart phone.⁠
⁠
Electrical energy → Light + Sound + Heat.⁠
⁠
💡 One input, three outputs, all at once. The screen lights, the speaker sounds, the back grows warm. A conversion is not always one-to-one, and an answer that names only one output is incomplete.⁠

🔬 Primary science tuition tip: Lower-primary Science looks like general knowledge. It isn't.

P3 and P4 are where the answering habits are set — the comparison words, the survival-needs list, the conditions for growth. And those habits are assumed, silently, for the next four years.

A child who arrives in P5 without them isn't behind on content. They're behind on how to write an answer — which is much harder to spot, and much more expensive to fix.

Most parents focus on whether their child knows the topics. The more important question at P3 and P4 is whether they know how to answer them — because the marking scheme doesn't just reward the right fact. It rewards the right structure.

"Between you and I" is actually grammatically wrong — and it's one of the most common mistakes students (and adults!) make every day. 👀

The rule is simple: use 'I' when the person is doing the action, and 'me' when the action happens to them.

Here's some examples:
📌 "She and I went to the canteen." ✅ — we're doing the action
📌 "Give the sweets to Ravi and me." ✅ — the action happens to us

💰P5 primary maths tuition tip: P5 Percentage questions on GST and discount look like arithmetic — and the mark is almost always somewhere else. Here are three, and the exact spot each one is lost.

1️⃣ "Li Xuan bought a mobile phone that cost $250 before GST and paid an additional 9% GST.
(a) Find the GST amount. (b) Find the total amount she paid."

(a)
100% → $250
1% → $250 ÷ 100 = $2.50
9% → $2.50 × 9 = $22.50
(b) $250 + $22.50 = $272.50

💡 Two routes get you there and both earn the mark: the unitary one above, or the fraction — 9/100 × $250. The thing to hold onto is that the price before GST is always 100%. Pick whichever route keeps the decimal clean — unitary is safer when the percentage is awkward.

2️⃣ "The usual price of a bag was $144. During a sale there was a storewide 20% discount.
(a) How much was the discount? (b) How much did the bag cost after the discount?"

(a) 20/100 × $144 = $28.80
(b) $144 − $28.80 = $115.20

⚠️ Both answers come out of the same single line of working — and this is where a mark quietly disappears. (a) wants the discount. (b) wants the price. A child who writes $115.20 in the slot for (a) has done all the thinking and still lost it.

3️⃣ "Maxi bought a skateboard for $83 before GST. How much did he pay after 9% GST?"

9/100 × $83 = $7.47 → $83 + $7.47 = $90.47

💡 $83 is the price before GST, so it is the 100% — the 9% is added on top of it, never taken out. And keep the exact cents through every step — rounding $7.47 up to $7.50 gives $90.50, so the working is right and the answer is wrong.

📌 GST is charged on the price after the discount — not on the usual price.

👉 Give your child question 2 and ask for (a) only. It is a surprisingly easy mark to drop.

🔬 PSLE science tuition tip: Most parents assume the PSLE Science syllabus changed in big ways. It didn't. What changed was the wording — and in Science, wording is exactly what the marker marks.

A P5 student who writes "the xylem transports water" has understood the science perfectly. But the current syllabus no longer asks for those words — and the marker won't reward them.

A P6 student who defines friction as acting "when two surfaces are in contact" has given last year's definition of a concept that still exists. Same science. Wrong phrasing. Lost mark.

That's the gap most families don't know about — and it's quietly costing marks at every level.

Topics were renamed. Definitions were rephrased. A long list of technical terms stopped being required. The underlying science stayed almost entirely intact — but the wording the marker expects changed with it.

We broke it down into a practical guide covering exactly what changed in the PSLE Science syllabus at P4, P5, and P6 — level by level, with the old and new wording placed side by side — so your child is practising the right answer, not last year's.
